Men’s Division 3,Malvern v MCC/Bendigo at Malvern Town Hall 8 May 2021
Well, we received a walkover last week from Surrey Park and subsequently they (SP) decided to pull that team out of the LV Div 3 competition. This resulted in Div 3 having 5 teams and the fixture being modified to accommodate the withdrawal. We were on top of the ladder!
It was a fine and sunny beautiful morning, but the clouds rolled in before the first quarter commenced. The match was at Malvern’s Town Hall ground and both their State League and Div1 team had a bye. Yes, Malvern did drop two players to Div3.
Bendigo required to supply an alternate club referee as Lester Young was unavailable. That meant Gino had to ref, but he was asked to officiate the MCC Div1 game as a favour to MCC. MCC’s club stalwart Nuggie (Barry Nugent) donned the ref’s gear for the Div. 3 match. This meant we were short a very skilful and experienced forward, but MCCBendigo still fielded 14 players, while Malvern had 15 players.
Adam Burrowes (Coach) was a little frustrated with the game performance, as our good plays are as good as any top team in the division. Although we have periods of play that were chaotic and top teams will take advantage of this.
The first quarter was ultimately the best quarter for the team’s scorers hitting the back of the net 3 times to the opposition’s 4. We scored a single goal in the second and fourth quarters and was kept scoreless in the third.
The MCCBendigo team defence was consistent, keeping Malvern very experienced skilled forwards to 4, 5, 4, and 4 goals per quarter. There were 2 players that did the damage, Travis Croll 5 goals and 5 assists, who we all know as he had trained with the Bendigo boys when working in Bendigo 4 to 5 years ago; and an ex Australian player T Laidlaw with his 4 goals. This is the team to beat to win the Div. 3 grand finale.
The coaches and manager’s goals for the Div. 3 team are to:
have fun,
learn and improve on your lacrosse skills, and
grow as a team.
Let’s continue to have fun, think about how we can improve as lacrosse players and therefore as a team!
Scorers: 3 I Dixon, 1 T Davis. R Volny
Assists: 2 A Orr
Votes: M Mellor, R Volny and F Echof
Our next game is against Camberwell at Camberwell’s Eric Raven Res, and
we hope to have a 2-3 Bendigo players returning to the line-up.
