Bulldogs on solid rock as they down
Goanna...s
In a brilliant 88 minute spell, the
Third Division Bulldogs banished last year’s Kelso Curse to the neighbouring
Milperra Tip with a devastating account of the Holroyd-Parramatta Goannas at
the weekend.
The match began in blistering fashion
with a fiery five minute foray by Brad “What a funny old fellow is” Humphry.
The former Coffs Harbour pin-up boy
went nuts early, snapping a sensational goal to get the Doggies on the board.
Two minutes later, he set up another
with deft hands over to Shane “Colin” Powell.
Powelly, fresh from a pre-match phone
call to his parents, was unstoppable, booting five for the opening term on his
way to an amazing match tally of nine from the forward pocket.
Sammy Laughlin, Dicko, Toma, Pikey
and Backy ran riot over the opposition, backed up by another miserly
performance by a backline featuring the Gorilla-loving Simon “Gomer” Pyle for
the first time this season.
Dean “Hardman” Hughey, Andy “Still no
nickname” Boehm and Michael “I swallow forwards like a Pacman” Paxman were far
too experienced for the shell-shocked Goannas, who managed only two goals for
the match.
John “Moth” Hook was handy around the
ground while the pressure applied by little Jezza Osborne, Brownie, Joshy
Edwards and Currie resulted in free after free.
The spiritual vice-captain, Casey
“Whacky Dancer” Stephens clearly was not amused by the Powell exhibition,
particularly when by half time he remained goal-less.
Quietly chuckling under his breath,
the coach, Shaun “Gull” Fewings moved the Big Cat to Centre Half Forward and
told his runner, Chris Holmes, to “watch this.”
As predicted, the Cat took his
frustrations out on the football, kicking five for the second half to add to
his total of 22 for the season so far.
Honouring a promise to move the
backline up forward upon a 10 goal lead, the Gull transferred Sampey and
Boehmy.
While Sampey didn’t assimilate,
Boehmy was in everything but couldn’t get a straight line kick to goal.
Finally, in the dying moments, the
Port Adelaide-loving defender, desperately moved to full forward, came good,
taking a strong mark to get on the board and help propel the undefeated Dogs to
a 156 point victory, their fifth in succession.
