BULLDOGS DETERMINED TO TAKE THE PENNANT OUT OF HILLS
The Third Division Bulldogs notched up win number eight from
as many starts when they downed Pennant Hills by 27 points at the Village Green
at the weekend.
The home side got off to a terrific start, highlighted by an
extraordinary 55 metre goal on the run by top mid-fielder, Ryan Pike.
The Dogs held onto a seven-goal-to-two lead by halftime and
had the visitors on the ropes by the third change, despite the fierce wet
weather and a centre square under several inches of mud and water.

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs squandered their chance to bury
Pennant Hills in the final term.
They took their feet off the accelerator, failing such
basics as manning up, and allowed the Demons to kick four goals to zero in the
final term.
Coach, Shaun Fewings, was happy for the win, not so happy
about some of his side’s errors.
“The pressure applied through our tackles was tremendous,
but we created a lot of extra work for ourselves through poor kicks and
handballs; and a lack of shepherds.
“A lot of that can be blamed on the weather and the greasy
pill, but a lot of it can’t.
“Hurling a footy in an opponent’s face and costing us 50
metres is just silly stuff.
“I can’t help feeling that we knew we had it in the bag and
eased up too much in the last term.
“I looked up at one stage and there were four Penno players
loose on one of their half forward flanks, a goal was inevitable.”
The positives include Pike’s extraordinary game.
(The Penno player
slowed down when he spotted Niall’s strange noggin)
He seemed to pop up everywhere, taking marks and driving the
ball forward.
Pike was ably assisted by another good performance from Dan
Roth, who consistently played in front and put in extra efforts to make the
contests.
(Rothy sends his

Ben Currie’s defensive attack on the ball was impressive,
Mark “Dicko” Dixon
was productive but down on last week, Ben Camilleri is on fire, Michael Paxman,
Andy Boehm, Josh Edwards and Chris Peters were reliable as usual in the
backline while Johnny Hook tried hard in the wet.
It was interesting to note the UTS coach in the crowd,
watching events.
The Bulldogs are set to play UTS this week at Trumper Park and will be hoping for more input
from their “veterans.”
This week sees the return of Casey “Big Cat” Stephens and
Tim “Timber” Welsh on a smaller ground, suited to long kicks down the middle
and front and square goals, a ground where Dixon and Backler learnt their trade.
