JETS return the favour as Bulldogs
suffer first loss for the season
The Third Division UNSW-ES
Bulldogs’ winning streak came to an end at the weekend with a disappointing
nine point loss to the Norwest Jets at the Village Green.
It was an eagerly awaited
clash with the Dogs getting up by eight points in the teams’ first encounter
earlier this year.
The Jets put the first two
goals on the board but the Bulldogs fought back and the game developed into a
see-sawing goal for goal affair.
The visitors were consistently
first to the ball and gathered it with ease while the home side appeared flat
and lethargic.
The Bulldogs were repeatedly
second to the football and were plagued with poor disposals that led to
constant turnovers and wasted opportunities.
Time after time, kicks fell
short of their targets, putting the would-be recipients under acute pressure
from the eager Jets who seemed to snare the loose ball far more easily.
Norwest could have put the
game well out the Dogs’ reach had they kicked straight and were enjoying total
domination out of the centre.
While the Jets were playing
at their best, the same could not be said for the home team with only a handful
of players playing to their potential.
Dan “David Lee” Roth was a
stand-out, throwing himself into repeated contests down the wing.
His efforts were epitomised
by an attack on the football that saw him hand off to David Backler, only to
get it back and score a thumping goal 45 metres out off one step.
Brad “Humpers” Humphry, Warren “Swanny” Swanson
and Shane “Rowdy” Powell can hold their heads high after desperate efforts all
day.
Humphry’s running down of
one of the Jets’ leading players in Aaron Clayden brought the house down but
despite just two kicks in it at the end, the Bulldogs were playing well below
par.
Dogs Coach, Shaun Fewings,
was disappointed with the result.
“Mentally, we did not come
to play and that was a let down,” he said.
“We got slaughtered from the
middle with some of our big name players not responding at all.
“I think we have a bit of
work to do before the finals, particularly with our midfielders’ reluctance at
times to work hard defensively.
“I think there is a bit of a
fitness problem with one or two players as well and they may need to do more
than just one or two training sessions a week.
“A spell in the fours might
do some of them some good as well with players like Casey Stephens, Doc
Crocket, Sammy Laughlin, Ben Pumpa, Ben Currie, Tyson Deering, Niall
O’Leanachain, Jezza Osborne and Jezza Ampt in contention for the next match,”
Fewings warned.
The loss puts extra pressure
on the Dogs with games ahead against respected sides, Moorebank, Pennant Hills
and UTS.
