GRAND FINAL DAY
WOW! What a day for the mighty Bilambil Jets Junior Rugby League Club. So many people came up to me throughout the day complimenting us on what a fantastic job we had done to have the field and the club looking so magnificent. I have never felt so proud to be a part of our club and lead such a dedicated group of people.
Apparently, it was even mentioned in the Gold Coast Bulletin that the Gold Coast JRL could learn a thing or two from Group 18 about how to host a Grand Final. It also commented on what a terrific atmosphere and good standard of football was played on the day.
So, now it is time to say thankyou to so many people who worked tirelessly over the past weeks to make sure everything went like clockwork. Firstly, I want to recognise the massive effort put in to having our field looking a million dollars by Craig Rowles with assistance from a great life member and supporter, Billy Clarke.
A massive part of our day was the canteen, with Vicki Curry leading a large contingent of supporters and parents helping out with serving and cooking. They were under the pump all day and coped amazingly well.
The gates were busy all day with organising parking and handling the large number of people attending the event. The estimated crowd for the day was well over 2 500 people. A special thank you must go to Rod Cornelius, Leith Andrew and their band of helpers who manned the gates all day.
It never ceases to amaze me how many parents who have no children at the club still volunteer when a call for help goes out. So a personal thank you to all those special people who came out of club retirement to lend their experience, knowledge and expertise on the day. You were invaluable! Thank you to all the wonderful new parents at the club who helped even though many did not have a child playing on the day. We hope to have your support for many years to come!
The dugout has been a long term project that was fast tracked to be finished before the grand final. There are far too many people to name individually for fear of missing many who so generously donated their time and/or materials, a collective, massive thank you for a very impressive structure. I have received many compliments for your hard work and commitment to the club!
To all our club sponsors this year goes a massive thankyou because without your support the club would not be able to function at the high level it prides itself on. It is the kids that benefit most from your generosity and we look forward to your continued and valued support.
I would also like to recognise the contribution from Solo Waste this year in assisting Bilambil with hosting the Grand Final. Solo not only provide toilets, rubbish bins and skips but also tackled the huge task of designing, building and erecting the fantastic new scoreboard. Rob Richards and his team from Solo made sure the impossible happened all within two weeks as the finishing touches went on at 6am Grand Final Day!
Also, to the Group 18 Representatives Mal, Roy and Harro who officiated on the day, along with the FAO’s and referees, a heartfelt thank you for all you do! We would not have a competition without you.
Lastly, what about our teams that made the GF’s! The 10’s were gallant in defeat meeting a very determined Cudgen side. Making the GF is a terrific achievement in your first year of competitive football boys. Congratulations to Mick, Tom, and crew.
In the 15s, the mighty Jets had a gutsy win coming from behind, trailing 12 – 0 at half time. It was a thrilling finish that roused the crowd into a frenzy of support which undoubtedly set the tone for the 16 1/2s. Well done to Zach Fryer, in his first year of coaching, and his team. What an fantastic achievement!
The boys of our senior team were outstanding! To win in the final year is the pinnacle of the JRL competition and something very special to remember. Congratulations fellas. Rowlsey certainly had the boys pumped and primed as they were convincing winners over Tugun. Well done Craig, Seddo, Brian and their trainers.
There is so much more I could say but I will leave that to presentation day on Saturday. Obviously, it would be impossible for me to personally thank everyone individually in this report for their contribution and generosity that makes our club so outstanding and unique. Please know that you are all invaluable to our club.
I will finish with thanks to all the clubs and their supporters for the way they both participated and conducted themselves on the day. It certainly was both an enjoyable and successful day for all of us.
