Welcome to the Bombers - Piva Wright
The Redland Bombers have added to their tall playing stocks with the signing of former Richmond rookie Piva Wright.
Wright taken by the Tigers as selection 74 in the 2011 Rookie Draft is a robust 191cm/97kg and has experienced playing as a tall defender/forward.
A 19 year old of Samoan descent Wright was recruited from the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup where he played in 2010/11. He also represented Victoria Country in the 2011 AFL NAB Under 18 Championships.
Redland Football Club Football Manager Martin King stated “From a list management perspective Piva is a massive gain for the club. We have primarily recruited him to shore up our defensive playing stocks but are also mindful of his capacity to play forward”.
“Importantly Piva still harbours aspirations to return to the AFL system and it has been our belief, through the courting process, that the Redland FC and the NEAFL are viable vehicles to pursue that goal” King added
The Bombers defensively were the worst ranked side in the top five during 2012 and were regularly exposed for a lack of height down back. The recruitment of Wright and former Queensland Scorpion/Mt Gravatt defender Nathan Reid is designed to address those shortcomings as well as releasing several players who were asked to play as undersized key defensive posts to more offensive roles.
Wright arrives in Brisbane on Monday December 3 and will train with his new team mates up until December 15 when the Bombers break for the festive season.
