ROUND 1 ALL SAINTS v BERALA BEARS

On Sunday 15 April in round 1 of the Inter City Combined Competition All Saints defeated Berala Bears in a thriller 28-26 at Peter Hislop Park, Auburn. Saints had the early running with livewire hooker Tom Kennedy causing the Bears defence plenty of headaches. However, the Bears steadied and opened the scoring with a converted try to lead 6-0. Saints replied when centre Mick Rauth scooped up a loose ball to sprint away to score, halfback Col Farmilo swung his kick wide, 6-4. Saints gained the lead when flying winger Sevao Stowers out sprinted the Bears defence to score, Farmilo converted from out wide for Saints to lead 10-6. As the halftime siren sounded the Bears scored under the posts to regain the lead 12-10. Upon resumption Saints hammered the Bears tryline before the Bears intercepted and raced 90 metres to score 16-10. Saints levelled the scores when quick hands along the backline saw Rauth post his second try, Farmilo converted 16-16. Saints were now on a roll with forwards Chris Hemsworth and Tim Blunden making big runs before the ball was spun wide and second rower Nathan Alvaro kicked ahead for Rauth to regather and score, Farmilo missed the kick 20-16. Minutes later front rower Daniel Todd burst through the Bears defence and raced 70 metres to score, Farmilo missed the kick 24-16. Stowers added his second with a determined run along the sideline, Farmilo missed the conversion 28-16. The Bears refused to surrender and spun the ball wide to score 28-20. With 5 minutes on the clock the Bears smelt victory and posted a converted try 28-26. In the dying minutes the Bears were awarded a penalty and restarted play on the Saints tryline. The Bears went close to scoring on several occasion but stout never say die defence by the Saints players denied the gallent Bears. Saints held on for a well deserved 28-26 win.

Saints began poorly and the Titans pounced to post first points with a converted try 6-0. Saints failed to settle and Titans continued their dominance to post two further tries to take a commanding 16-0 lead. Saints finally settled and dynamic second rower Andy Fiagatusa busted the Titans defensive line before unloading to flying centre Mick Rauth who scored under the posts, winger Warrick Wood converted 16-6. Minutes later Saints went close when hooker Anthony “Tubby” Delise was held up over the tryline. Just prior to the break Titans added their fourth try to lead 22-6. Saints began the second stanza well and were rewarded when Fiagatusa scored under the posts, lock Peter “Big Show” Cashel converted 22-12. Saints were on a roll and quick hands along the back line saw Rauth muscle his way over to score, Cashels conversion attempt swung wide, 22-16. Titans replied with a converted try 28-16. Saints bridged the gap when livewire hooker “Gorgeous” George Papura darted over to score under the posts, Cashel converted 28-22. Once again Titans responded with a converted try 34-22. The second stanza began well for Saints when a scrum win against the feed saw Marsters add his second 24-6. TITANS 42 defeated ALL SAINTS 14

Tries: Jason Matika, Tai Marsters, Adam Francis. Goal: Clint Coorey.

In Reserve Grade Titans posted the first try to lead 4-0. Saints had a few early chances to score but poor ball control proved costly. Saints hooker Kyall Hepi was denied a certain try when he lost possession over the try line. Titans raced to a comfortable lead before centre Jason Matika scored and fullback Clint Coorey converted. Titans went to the break leading 20-4. The second half started like the first.  All Saints had plenty of ball in good field position but failed to capitalise.  Pushed passes and dropped balls in the end cost All Saints.  The second half however showed glimpses of what the team has to offer in attack with big Tai Marsters throwing off a few Titans defenders to score in the left hand corner and then Adam Francis was able to finish a great backline movement to score in the right hand corner.  There is only so much defence a team can do.  In the end ball control played a big part in this game and unfortunately the boys failed to hold onto the footy and therefore could not take advantage of scoring opportunities. Titans eventual winners 42-14.

Upon resumption Wests Tigers scored a converted try to extend their lead 24-14.  Saints hit back when livewire halfback Tom Kennedy kicked ahead and big second rower Ahsam Galuvao scooped up the loose ball to score under the posts, Cashel converted for Saints to trail 24-18. Saints were on fire and when second rower Daniel "Sweeney" Todd executed a perfect hit and spin to score under the posts the scores were locked at 24-24. Cashel converted for Saints to hit the lead 26-24 with 20 minutes on the clock. Great defence from Chris Hemsworth, Warren Hall and Carl Anderson frustrated the Wests Tigers attack but with 10 minutes to go Wests Tigers scored to regain the lead 30-26. After a great pass from Kennedy Saints looked set to score but bombed a certain try with two on one. Hi-lite of the game was a long sprint to the corner post with a classic covering tackle by Stowers to stop a certain Wests Tigers try - had the screaming crowd on its feet. Wests Tigers scored a late try from a lucky rebound kick to run out 34-26 winners. An outstanding effort by All Saints A grade against the Wests Tigers under 20's players.
RESERVE GRADE
CAMPBELLTOWN WARRIORS 29 defeated ALL SAINTS 16
Tries: Ryan Gunn-Visintin, Warrick Wood, Tuipulotu Kaulola
Goals: Clint Coorey 2
Match Report: Warriors opened the scoring to lead 6-0. Saints hit back when a fine backline movement saw centre Ryan Gunn score out wide. Clint Cooreys conversion attempt swung wide 6-4. Warriors posted another try to lead 12-4. Saints replied with a try to Tuipulotu Kaulola and converted by Clint Coorey12-10. Long runs by hooker Claude Hafed and centre Ryan Brown lacked support. Just prior to the break Warriors scored to extend their lead to 18-10 at the break. After the break Warriors were first to score and convert which took their lead to 24-10 but thanks to some great foot work, fullback Warrick Wood was able to score next to the post and the goal was converted by Clint Coorey which took the score to 24 - 16.  Warriors added another try and a field goal 29-16. A massive effort was made by the boys who played the whole game with only 2 reserves. Unfortunately we could not convert the effort into a win.  Heads up guys it’s not easy playing a full game with only 2 reserves.  We are all proud of you.
