Snowy Mountains Academy Off and Running

The concept of the program is designed to have players from Jindabyne to Bombala, out to Delegate and across to Nimmitabel come together, engage in some skills surrounding the game, forge some friendships and play a game together at the completion of the program. With Rugby League on its knees in Jindabyne and Bombala unable to field international aged teams, the concept of an academy allows players to work under experience coaches and be up skilled with the long term goal of breathing life into the area and maybe playing in the Group 16 competition in 2013. Work that Mick Hamilton and his team have put into trying to get Rugby League alive in the Jindabyne area has been endless and with the NRL now injecting some much need resources, experienced staff and support ensuring the possibility of teams playing as a joint venture with Jindabyne and Bombala is closer to a reality.

“There has been some tremendous work done over the years and we feel by having players in a camp situation, fitting them out in recognisable clothing and offering them a game at the end will hopefully entice them to form a team and play in the Group 16 competition.” NRL Game Development Officer Damian Lindeberg stated.  “This area is an important development area for the Game and having two Rugby League proud towns unable to field teams has been a travesty.” Lindeberg added. “Players have ventured to Cooma to play in the Canberra competition and that is great but what has remained is players not able to play due to numbers but by combining both towns and the resources of remaining players now heightens the opportunity to field teams as a joint venture can now become a reality” Lindeberg concluded.

Two camps will be conducted in Bombala 1st & 2nd December, Jindabyne 15th & 16th December pre-Christmas with another camp in Narooma on the 2nd & 3rd February 2013, before winding up with games at the Group 16 Bibbenluke Carnival in March. Players will then have the chance to nominate and play in the Group 16 competition in 2013.
