First Round Kicks Off After 1 Week Delay

AFL is alive again in Coolum.  After the rains of last week caused a delay to the start of the season for AFL across the Sunshine Coast, Round 1 of the 2012 season was played under blue skies and in perfect conditions.  The footy was hotter than the April sun with four games played at the home of footy in Coolum, the High School.

Under 16
Coolum Beach Breakers v Gympie
The Coolum Beach Breakers hosted Gympie for the 1st game of the season. After training hard in the Pre Season the Breakers were keen to go out there and be competitive against Gympie. Unfortunately Coolum had a really slow start which let Gympie get away early. In the 2nd half, the boys from Coolum really put their bodies in and started to get some run on with the ball movement from the centre starting to go our way. Joel Witheyman (Best on Ground) was at his most dangerous running out of the centre and was helped by Thomas Maher, Liam Moyle, Luke McKinney, Blake Lhotka, Jacob Geale and Luke Ainsworth who played down back and did a fantastic job repelling many opposition raids. In the ruck, Trent Thomas and Connach Bretherton tried hard all day. The Breakers backline was under pressure all day but never stopped trying with Mackenzie Quinlivan, Jake Dix and Brandon Coleman trying their best. Sam Brackley and at times Connach Bretherton and Luke Ainsworth were hard workers for the Breakers in the Coolum forward line during the day with great help from some of the under 14’s playing up in Jack Mullett, Ash Boykett, Elliott Smith and Sam Fowles who was playing an outstanding game before going down with a knee injury.  All of the boys never stopped trying in hot conditions and will only get better when combinations in play start to get better with each game.

Best: Joel Witheyman, Thomas Maher, Luke Ainsworth, Liam Moyle, Blake Lhotka and Luke McKinney

Goal Kickers: Luke McKinney 3, Joel Witheyman 1, Sam Brackley 1, Ash Boykett 1

Final Score:  Coolum Beach Breakers: 6.6.42 lost to Gympie: 23.22.160

Under 14
Coolum Beach Breakers v Pomona
It was a game of missed opportunities for the Breakers in the Under 14’s.  Pomona kicked with the wind in the first quarter but the Breakers were disciplined in defence managing to keep Pomona to just 2 goals and managing to get one of their own against the wind.  In the second quarter Coolum was playing like the wind was going to do it for them allowing Pomona to kick 3 goals into the wind which gave the visitors a 3 goal lead at half time.  Bri Noel was getting plenty of the ball through the middle with the help of Ash Boykett who was working tirelessly in the ruck and pushing all over the ground to offer a tall marking option.  Rohan Ward back playing at the Breakers was lively and ended up with 2 goals in his first game back for his old club.  Again it was hard work for the Breakers in the third quarter with Pomona again making the most of kicking with the wind and it appeared this game might be a bit of a blow out.  In the last quarter and finally taking advantage of the wind, the Breakers came out to make a game of it kicking 4 goals to 1 and just falling short of a terrific come from behind victory.  Jack Mullett and Toman Kriz were in everything, Sam Fowles and Jordan Gregory were kicking goals and both ended by with 2 each for the game.  Jarrod Trahar and Elliot Smith were amongst the best.

Best:  Jordan Gregory, Elliot Smith, Jarrod Trahar, Sam Fowles, Ash Boykett, Brianna Noel

Goal Kickers:  Jordan Gregory 2, Sam Fowles 2, Rohan Ward 2, Jack Mullett 1

Final Scores:  Coolum Beach Breakers 7.8.50 lost to Pomona 9.8.62

Under 12 Division 1
Coolum Beach Breakers v Noosa
AFL is alive in Coolum in 2012. The AFL Sunshine Coast Junior season officially kicked off with a great game of footy on Sunday in Coolum with neighbouring clubs Coolum and Noosa facing off.  Superb conditions and two fit, competitive teams meant we were in for a great game.  The Coolum boys started in a hurry with 5 first quarter goals thanks to some tough work in the centre and clever work from the forwards.  The Breakers outfit knew they were in for a tough day with Noosa clawing back in the 2nd term to be within 3 goals at half time.  A strong belief in each other saw the Coolum team run out the game because of their superior fitness base and slam on 5 further goals in the 3rd quarter and another 2 goals in the last for a comfortable 37 point win.  A great way to start the season.

Best: Ben Dickison, Thomas Griffiths, Tom Ansell, Harry Burke, Jarvis Beitzel, Hayden Wallbank

Goal Kickers: Ben Dickson 4, Tom Ansell 3, Xavier Bibby 2, Hayden Wallbank , Kalen Flynn , Thomas Griffiths, Jayden. Morrow, Harry Burke

Final Scores:  Coolum Beach Breakers 14.14.98 defeated Noosa 9.7.61

Under 12 Division 2
Coolum Beach Breakers v Pomona
The first game of the season for the Under 12 Division 2 Coolum Beach Breakers was a great experience for this young team.  Even though the team appeared to be up against a more experienced and older group, they walked away with some very positive
signs!  For most of the team, this was their first game out of last years Under 10 competition.  The boys quickly found that the game was a lot faster than last year’s under 10’s and that that you can tackle or be tackled!  Some of our young players showed good skills and others a commitment to learning the game.  Well done to Pomona with a good win and terrific signs for our Breakers!

Best:  Dean Polydoros, Alexander Jones, Eli Farrow, Daniel Deans, Sunny Walsh, Keelan Turnbull.

Goal Kickers:  Jarrod Thomas

Final Scores:  Coolum Beach Breakers 1.2.8 lost to Pomona 19.13.127
