In 2010, the Wollongong Saints Women’s Australian Football League Club was established as the first and only women’s team in the Illawarra region. The Saints kicked off the competition for their third season in April 2012 defending their 2011 grand final win, which saw the club become the Division 2 Champions of the Sydney Women’s AFL. 2012 was a successful year for the Wollongong Saints after being propelled into first division with a 7th spot seeding, the Saints finished in third position.
In the years we have been operating and competing as a club, many of our women players have become national representatives for NSW and played at the highest level of competition for women in AFL in NSW. Other achievements include 6 women from our champion team being selected to play in friendly International matches.
In 2014, the Saints celebrated their prestigious 5 year history in the Illawarra and Sydney AFL competition.
In 2015 and 2016, the Wollongong Saints were a grand final team, however fell short of the premiership, in 2016 by an overtime showdown.
In 2017, the Saints finally tasted sweet victory once again and brought the premiership cup back down the highway.
2018 ended with a second place after defending our title in the Sydney AFL against Blacktown Magic, followed by a an AFLX tournament win to start the season in 2019 and a goodbye to Sydney AFL with a third premiership to the Saints name.
The future is bright for the Wollongong Saints with a dedicated and motivated committee of volunteers and coaching staff, and a pending merger with Figtree AFC.
