Age MVP Awards

The North Brisbane Basketball Assn perpetual age awards are bestowed in each age group that competes for points in the championship season (Under 12’s to Under 20’s & GBL).  This trophy is the most prestigious award for players to aspire to in their age division and is awarded by the age group coaches to the Most Valuable Male and Female Player in their age group.

Since 2002, the history of our club has been recognised through each age award being named after an aspect of the club’s past.

The Dragon Award – Under 12 Most Valuable Player

The Dragon Logo has been synonymous with the North Brisbane Basketball Association and its predecessors almost from inception.  The original Dragon Logo was borrowed from a club associated with the brother of life member, Fred Van Dongen.  The 2001 management committee commissioned the design of a new logo with a brief to the designer to capture aggression, a more modern image that could be shared between the junior and senior programs and one, which shows a connection with basketball.  The full seven-colour logo is striking in its effect and is now a feature of our playing uniforms and marketing.

The Hills District Award – Under 16 Most Valuable Player

After some years in existence, the club formed an allegiance with the West Mitchelton Football Club and adopted their West Mitchelton name. The club was based at the football club and fund rasing by the club allowed construction of the external concrete court at the West Mitchelton ground. The West Mitchelton name was used by the club until it was incorporated as the North Brisbane Basketball Association. The strength of the club during these years is still evident today by a number of members still referring to the club as “West Mitchie”.

The Oakleigh Award – Under 18 Most Valuable Player

Our Club began its life in 1967, as a result of a spilt from the North West Districts Basketball Club. The club formed an association with Oakleigh Football Club and in its second year of existence won the A grade Brisbane Championships. The junior program started two years after the A grade program.  The Oakleigh Club went on to become the West Mitchelton Club.

The Tarrant Award – Under 20 Most Valuable Player

The Under 20’s Age Group Trophy has been named after our long-standing GBL coach, Geoff Tarrant.  Geoff joined the Dragons playing reserve grade in 1987.  In 1991, he assumed the coaching of our GBL and other A division sides and coached five teams to grand finals in that year.  In his unbroken reign as GBL coach, the side has been a grand finalist on many occasions, winning 4 premierships.  The award has been named in recognition of the club’s senior program and the contribution that Geoff Tarrant has made to our senior program in his numerous years as coach.
