Vulcans open trial a success

A scorching Cornwall Park day was the scene for the Auckland Vulcans first trial of 2013.

Amongst the 85-strong trial squad were a mix of up-and-coming amateur footballers as well as experienced Vulcans players such as Dylan Collier and Herman Retzlaff.

The trial consisted of several mini games which were keenly watched by both the Vulcans and Vodafone Warriors coaching staff, including head coach Matt Elliot who said he was 'pleased' with the overall quality on display.

Prospective players travelled from as far away as the Northland and Waikato regions to have their shot at making the Vulcans 2013 training squad.

Newly appointed Vulcans head coach Willie Swann said that despite vastly different skill levels being on display he was able to get a good idea of how the team is progressing so far.

"The first two games looked a little disjointed which is understandable because there were varying levels of fitness out there … the third game, which featured some of the guys who had trained over the summer with us, was a good skill level," Swann said.

The Vulcans continue to build towards the 2013 VB NSW Cup competition with another trial on the 16th of February against a Pacific Island selection, followed a week later by a final outing against the Waicoa Bay Stallions.

Both matches are to be played at Cornwall Park.
