On Sunday, East Perth District Basketball Association (EPDBA) held its third specialised development session for Girls for the summer of 2012/13. The turnout has been fantastic, with the number of players continuing to grow with some 45 girls at the last session, spread evenly across age groups ranging from 10 years through to 16 years old. The Players enjoyed themselves in a safe and fun environment developing fundamental offensive and defensive skills throughout the afternoon session The Players enjoyed themselves in a safe and fun environment, developing fundamental offensive and defensive skills throughout the session.
There are also plenty of experienced coaches involved with a variety of Development and Western Australian Basketball League Coaches coordinated by current East Perth Eagles Women’s Head Coach, Aaron Berryman. Aaron has been associated with basketball for over 40 years both as a player and a coach. In the past 10 years Aaron has been very active as a development coach with various affiliated associations of Basketball WA and in the last five years has been the coach of various touring School Sport WA Teams.
The specialised development sessions for girls is held each Sunday 11am to 1pm on Court 1 and 2 at Morley Sport Recreation Centre. It is an open session for girls and we encourage any girls who are born after 1996 through to 2002 to come on down and bring a friend to have some fun developing new skills. The girls will need to bring a water bottle, reversible singlet (if you have one), mouth guard (preferred) and a sports towel.
Arising from these sessions is an opportunity for the girls to participate in the 2012 Smarter than Smoking BWA State Championships that are held at the Western Australian Basketball Centre in Floreat. EPDBA has nominated teams for Under 11; 12; 13; 14; and 15’s. From the session held on Sunday we have had a great response from girls who wish to participate. If we get enough interest for those girls born 1997 and before we can look at nominating teams in the Under 17 and 19 competitions.
Details of the relevant state championships are as follows:
• December 1/2 –Under 11 & Under 13 Boys/Girls
• December 8/9 –Under 12 & Under 15 Boys/Girls
• December 15/16 – Under 14, Under 17 & Under 19 Boys/Girls
Participation in the State Championships is not compulsory; however girls may want to experience basketball at the next level up from their current junior competition. They will get to play against girls from within their age group from around Perth Metropolitan Area and other parts of the state. Should any girls be interested in playing for East Perth Eagles, do not hesitate to let any of the coaches know at the sessions on Sunday.
The State Championships can be a stepping stone, as well as a good guide whether the girls may want to play for East Perth Eagles in the states’ elite junior competition the Western Australian Basketball League (WABL). WABL is played on Sundays from late April through to late September each year against eleven other Basketball Associations.
Girls may choose to play in these championships this time around, or they may wish to keep up with the development sessions and playing games in their respective junior competition, and still look at playing WABL in 2013.
EPDBA wishes to thank the girls, and their parents, for their participation in the sessions to date.
