The East Perth Eagles Under 12 Girls Team had a successful championship making it all the way to the BWA State Championships Under 12 Women’s Division 2 Semi Finals. During the Pool games, the Eagles Under 12 Girls won three of their four Pool 2 games. The first two games on the Saturday were close with the girls coming from behind the win the games.
In the first game the Girls were slow to start giving the Geraldton team an eight point lead in the first five minutes. From then on the girls applied themselves on the defensive end and started scoring in the second half. Great first up efforts by newcomers to the State Championships in Abbey-Jane Leaver, Chelsea Zamperelli, Shannon Campbell and Cody Melville. The final score was Eagles 18 defeating Geraldton 14 on the back of an outstanding second half.
The second game was against Wanneroo Wolves and again the Wolves got away to a 10 point lead before the Eagles started playing hard basketball. It was a close game leading up to the last five minutes when Madison Alone, Nicolette Sparks and Tara Phillips caused a number of turnovers that saw Madison Alone go on a scoring spree to draw level and then go ahead in the last two minutes with the Eagles 27 defeating Wolves 21.
In the third game on Sunday morning the girls were not able to stop the Cockburn Cougars in the first half which saw them shooting well and scoring. In the second half the girls applied themselves but could not overcome the Cougars with Eagles 18 losing a tight one to the Cougars 22. The game saw Tia McGrath and Morgan Aquino play a great second half particularly with Tia’s tenacity on defence and Morgan’s rebounding against a tall Cougars Team that almost got the Eagles back into the game.
In the final pool game on a hot Sunday at WA Basketball Centre, the girls came to play. The first half against Geraldton (for the second time this weekend) was by far the best performance of the weekend. The defence was impressive with Tara Phillips and Abbey-Jane Leaver making a number of steals on loose passing by Geraldton that was as a result of the defensive pressure being applied by Nicolette Sparks, Tia McGrath and Madison Alone on the ball carriers from Geraldton. As a result of the turnovers created by tough team defence, Madison Alone had another great scoring game for the team. It was also very pleasing to see Morgan Aquino, Chelsea Zamperelli, Shannon Campbell and Cody Melville starting to apply the skills developed at the Girls Specialised Development Sessions held over the past 5 weekends, particularly on the defence. A loss in this game would have seen the girls fall out of finals contention, but the Eagles 25 defeated Geraldton 12 in a game that saw them cement first position on the Pool 2 Ladder.
In the Semi Finals the Eagles came up against second place team from Pool 1, Willetton Tigers where they unfortunately lost 33 to 23. The game was the fifth game for the girls over the weekend of tough games where they were forced to come from behind on a number of occasions and was played in hot conditions. The Girls never gave up with the whole team contributing throughout the game.
The Eagles Under 12 Girls played great team basketball all weekend and the semi-final appearance speaks for itself. It was a great learning experience, particularly for those who played in their first State Championships, but most importantly, all the girls had fun over the weekend!
A big thank you to Manager, Mandy Sparks for all her organising over the weekend and for the development sessions. Also a big thank you to all the parents for their support over the whole weekend. It was a great atmosphere for the girls to try their best and have fun learning more about basketball in a competitive environment. A great weekend!
Look forward to seeing all the girls back for the Specialised Development Sessions for Girls when they start up again in the new year and hopefully see them play for East Perth Eagles in the Western Australia Basketball League in 2013.
