BWA State Championship Under 15 Girls - 8 & 9 December 2012

On the weekend of the 8th and 9th of December our East Perth Eagles’ under 15 girls competed at the State Championships in the 2nd division. The Girls, all playing in their first State Championship, had a sensational Championship where they eventually finished Runners Up.

The weekend began with the girls getting to know each other and trying to work out the strange alien language of the coach.Despite our modest expectations and led superbly by Shanniah Alone we won our first game against Stirling in emphatic style.

It was on reflection at this point that we realised that we had a special group of girls who would play for each other with great spirit no matter what. This spirit and  competitive attitude was clearly evident during our next two games against the Perth Redbacks and the State 15s team and although we were defeated by small margins the girls won many admirers by their performance especially against the state girls where they threatened to cause an upset for most of the contest.

To our supprise and the non qualification status of the state team, we were advised of our advance to the grand final against the Perth Redbacks. The grand final was played a  frenetic pace with the teams going basket for basket for the first half. All our players were playing great defense and running the floor hard. The second half continued in the same way and as we began to tire the Redbacks established and maintained a10 point lead on the back of some more efficient offense.

Then with less than 5 minutes to go,   then came the surge! -- inspired by Tekira risking life and limb going for a  loose ball, our girls lifted and came back into the game with an astonishing fightback cumulating with a masive 3 point attempt for the win with a few seconds left from Shanele Alone which went all the way in but unfortunately bounced all the way out again. Alas we could not get another steal and went down still fighting by just 2 points.

Congratulations to our girls on one of the most exciting state championships I have attended and I am so impressed with everyone of you accepting the roles and concepts given to you, and for playing with such great spirit and determination.

Thankyou to our assistant coachs Marshelle and Anthony for your help and a special thankyou to our parents and club supporters.
