Round 6 and we made the long journey down to Cowes to take on Phillip Island. Mixed results on the day and we come away with 2 wins and 2 losses. As we have become accustomed to the Fourths boys got the day started with another crushing win this time over the number two side in the competition by 59 points. Coach McGannon has the boys fit and firing and we continue to meet each challenge with the same confidence and aggression. Gus Staley was fantastic all day and was clearly the best man on the ground, he was ably assisted by Gaz Park, Toby Redpath, Kieren Byers, Daniel Ryan and Jasper Walker. Goal kickers were Gus, Gaz and Jesse Clifton with 3 each and singles to Lima and Chumpy. Keep up the good work boys.
The Thirds were up against a top three side and got off to a great start leading into quarter time, they were still right in the game at half time but unfortunately a poor 3rd quarter where we were outscored 4 goals to nil and the margin was out 30 points. To the boys credit we fought back into the game and although we ended up going down by 27 points the boys can hold their heads up knowing that they are competing with the top sides and they are not that far off the mark. Keep working boys and if we can sneak into the finals anything can happen for us. Best players were Britto, Seany Bucko, Jacka, Josh McGannon, Zac Price and Toby Redpath, who had already played a cracker in the 4ths. Goal scorers were 2 to Tom Hamilton and singles to Keinen, Bailey H/P, Jacka, Chumpy and Tyler Shanahan.
Because of the considerable size of our injury list the reserves have suffered the greatest by not getting a regular and settled side onto the field and as a result we were beaten soundly on Saturday by a very good side. From start to finish we were outclassed by a well drilled side that will go along way this season. The coach was disappointed and the game will one that we will want to forget fairly quickly, the final margin a whopping 153 points. Better players were Heath Thompson who was clearly our best and knocked up in defense countering the relentless barrage of ball that found its way into the area. Jarrod McKenzie was also good in defense, also Symmo, Nico, Joel M/E and Kayno. We are due to get some players back in the coming weeks and this will make a big difference with a number of thirds players being asked to step up for another game on Saturdays. Keep your heads up guys and our fortunes will turn.
The seniors had some more bad news injury wise during the week with Dickie being diagnosed with a broken shoulder and set to miss 5-6 weeks, also big Laurie has torn a quad and will also miss 6-8 weeks, on the positive side we got Hooksey back this week for the first time since very early in round 1 and the Doctor Matty Standfield made his return to the field for 2012. A horrific start to the match and we found ourselves down by 7 goals at ¼ time and we had lost Choko Park who has been on fire in recent weeks with an ankle injury, Marshall asked the boys for a special effort to get themselves back into the match. The boys begun the journey back and oh my what an awesome performance they put on from quarter time onwards, when we hit the front early in the last quarter there was no way they were going to lose this one. Hooksey kicked 3 in the final quarter when the game was there to be won and Trav continued to battle like he does against a guy who could have easily been mistaken for Gullliver. A magnificent 10 point win that finally gets the monkey off the back down on the island. Best players in a real team effort was Snowy Bilney, Hooksey, Johnny Danckert, Jordy Shaw, Reggie Hoskin and Rhysy Staley. Goal kickers were Sammy and Hooksey 4 each and singles to Trav, Jordy, Cal Park, Micky D and Matty Standfield.
Next week we are at home against Stony Creek and are hoping to get a few players back from injury in both senior grades.
