AFL 9s Season Kicks Off
Last Friday night the Ballarat FNL held the first night of the newly formed AFL 9s Competition. The night was a great success with 6 teams playing and some great games played. The games were held at the Marty Bush Reserve and all took place at the same time on fields of 100m in length and 50m in width.
The 6 teams were made up of local players, people that had not played any competitive football before and many females which was great to see. Females are awarded 9 points for a goal, compared to a male receiving 6, so teams soon realised that it was very important to get the football into the hands of their female team mates.
The first round of games saw some really close contests. The Sebastopol FNC, Wanderers and the Ballarat Football Umpires Association (BFUA) teams had great wins on Friday night. BFUA team member Brian Edwards said “It was great to get out there and have a kick. All the people in our team seemed to have a great time so we look forward to next week”
AFL 9s is a non contact sport and all players adapted to the rules very well and displayed great enjoyment whilst playing. All games will take place at Mary Bush Reserve on Friday night’s commencing at 6:00pm.
Scores from Friday nights games were:
Wanderes 58 defeated Scorpions 48
Sebastopol 64 defeated The Masters 58
BFUA 72 defeated East Point 61
