Round 4
Seniors
Gisborne19.17 - 131 def Maryborough 10.9 – 69
Gisborne notched up their first win for the season against Maryborough at Gardiner Reserve on Saturday in an excellent return to form. An even first quarter saw both sides post three goals apiece for the quarter with Crosbie, Farrugia and Knox all having an influence. In the second quarter Gisborne’s running game really got going with Weaver and Messaoudi supplying a steady flow of footy into the Gisborne forward line and at quarter’s end the Doggies had piled on six goals to Maryborough’s solitary 2 points to give the Dogs a commanding lead at the long break. The third quarter was Gisborne’s best as they put the Magpies to the sword with a fantastic eight goal to one quarter. Down back, Belcher and Simpson were giving Maryborough nothing while Summerfield was racking up the possessions through the middle. Fitzgerald was busy around the stoppages and Pat McKenna and Huntley were also having good games. The last quarter saw the Magpies battle hard however the damage had been done and the Dogs came away with a much needed victory. Dan Weaver continued his terrific early season form with another great game while the return of Lachie Crosbie injected some real fast flowing ball movement. Ollie Messaoudi and Harrison Huntley were prominent as were Matt Knox and Pat McKenna in the forward half.

Reserves
Gisborne 18.12 – 120 def Maryborough 1.6 – 12
In blustery conditions, Gisborne Reserves hosted Maryborough in what turned out to be a lopsided affair with the Dogs putting on a polished display and dominating the contest from start to finish. Coach Ben Talbot asked for a good start and a four goal to zero first quarter saw Gisborne applying the scoreboard pressure that was missing the week before. From the first bounce, Campbell, Hynson and Nightscales were damaging and the Magpies had no answer to Gisborne’s hard running, hard tackling approach.
The second quarter saw Maryborough come out hard however the efforts of Burgess, Krispyn and Cecil saw Gisborne comfortably controlling the game for long periods and adding another four goals to the tally whilst the Magpies were once again held goalless for the term.
The third quarter for Maryborough mirrored the first half as Gisborne continued to control proceedings. Gisborne added another five majors to the tally to Maryborough’s one with Burgess, Campbell, Johnson and Hynson all continuing their good form for the Doggies.
The last quarter again was a tough tussle and the Magpies battled valiantly however the class of Gisborne continued to show through and the Dogs were able to cap off a fine four quarter effort with another five goals to eventually run out comfortable eighteen goal winners. Luke Burgess was the standout for Gisborne with Tim Hynson, Russ Nightscales, Jameson Campbell, Tom Cecil and Josh Krispyn also prominent.

Under 18’s
Gisborne 15.7 - 97 def Strathfieldsaye 11.7 - 73
Gisborne started well in the expected tough clash with the Strath Storm and were able to post four majors before the Storm even had time to take a breath. Scales and Govan were combining well in the middle and with Rodgers back to his best, were giving the Gisborne forwards first use of the footy and accurate kicking saw the Dogs holding a handy three goal break at the first change. Strath, as expected, kicked back in the second stanza and with the wind managed four majors to Gisborne’s two however it was still a very good half of footy for the young doggies who were able to go into the long break with a one goal lead and get set for hopefully a big third quarter with a healthy breeze. The Dogs came out firing on all cylinders with Jack Baker strong around the stoppages and showing TAC like intensity, he was able to drive the ball deep into the forward line on numerous occasions. James Fraser and Pat Trotta were super off half back, repeatedly repelling the Storm’s forward forays and driving the footy back into the Dogs forward line where the Gisborne forwards capitalized with six majors for the term to Storms solitary one point. The last was a quarter was a seesawing affair where the Storm were able to kick a couple of junk time goals, however the damage by Baker, Govan, Trotta and O'Hare had already been done and albeit for some undisciplined acts by some players and the coach, the end margin may have been a lot more. So now on to the undefeated Sandhurst outfit and the Gisborne boys will put in a big week on the track to steel themselves for the challenge and give it all they have in what promises to be a ding dong encounter between the ladder leaders at Gardiner.

B. grade
This was the closest game all day even though the girls had managed to construct a five goal lead by the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the girls kept the momentum going and did not concede the lead even though Maryborough came back at them very strongly. They managed to maintain their lead and then slightly increase it to 7 by three quarter time. Come the last quarter the Gizzy girls really turned it on playing fast flowing, precision netball to win by 11 with the final score reading 45 to 34 Gisborne’s way.
A.res
The first quarter was a very tight affair and at the end of the first term both teams went into the break even at 9 points apiece. In the second quarter the Gizzy girls kept their momentum going and had gained a 3 goal lead which gave them a spark for the last half. In the third quarter the girls applied the pressure and with all players working hard and doing their job, they had increase their lead to 11 goals with the three quarter time score sitting at 37 to 26 in Gisborne’s favor. The last quarter came and the girls kept up their work rate and increased their three quarter time tally from 37 to 53 whilst conceding only 3 goals to the opposition. The final score of 53 to 29 was a fitting result for the girl’s efforts in a game where they had played well all game but put together a particularly good second half.
A.grade
Maryborough came to Gisborne determined to give the Gizzy girls a run for their money. In The first quarter both teams went hard at the ball with Gisborne gaining a small lead of 4. In the second quarter the Gizzy girls started to play some fine netball chasing everything down and taking advantage of Maryborough’s mistakes and at the half time break had managed to post a score of 25-18 Gisborne’s way. Going into the last half the Gizzy girls knew that Maryborough would not go down without a fight and to the Gisborne girl’s credit they kept playing their own game while conceding nothing to the opposition to run out comfortable winners with a final score of 52 to 33. A terrific team effort was the basis for the Gisborne girl’s solid victory.
