Football Round 8 Summaries
Seniors
Eaglehawk 10.11 - 71 def Gisborne 8.9 – 57
Gisborne ventured up to a wet and slippery Canterbury Park to take on Eaglehawk on Saturday in a game that promised to be an intriguing contest. Early goals would be like gold and the Hawks jumped out of the blocks to score a few quick goals in the opening minutes of the game and at one stage held a three goal lead. The Bulldogs fought back tenaciously and by the end of the term had drawn back to be to be within eight points of the Hawks.
The second term was a very even affair with both sides adding a goal apiece and at the long break Eaglehawk had managed to gain a 13 point break in a game that had developed into a real slog due to the wet conditions.
In the third term the Bulldogs threw everything at the Hawks and at one stage drew to within one point of the opposition however in a late counter attack Eaglehawk saw off the Gisborne challenge and reached the three quarter break clinging to a 9 point lead.
In the last quarter, the Bulldogs fought valiantly to close the gap however the combination of the conditions and Eaglehawk’s determination to close the game down saw the Dog’s fall short by 14 points, a margin that was ultimately established in the first few minutes of the game.
Ollie Messaoudi had a fantastic game and his attack on the ball in the wet conditions was great. Midfielder’s Casey Summerfield, Ethan Minns and Tom May ran hard and worked tirelessly all day, Matt Knox kicked three goals and took several contested marks despite the ball being like a cake of soap and Cam Medica provided good run out of defence for Gisborne.

Best – O.Messaoudi, C.Summerfield, M.Knox, E.Minns, C.Medica, T.May.
Reserves
Eaglehawk 5.5 – 35 def Gisborne 4.8 – 32
Gisborne Reserves took on undefeated Eaglehawk in wet and wintery conditions at Canterbury Park, in a game that would give a good insight as to how far the Dogs can go this year. After a tough first quarter, the Hawks had established a handy 14 point buffer and with a good second quarter had extended that lead to 21 points at half time.
Despite the Eaglehawk lead, the mood amongst the Gisborne players at half time was very buoyant and this positivity was evident during the third term where the Dog’s attacked relentlessly. The defense did a great job keeping the Hawks scoreless for the term and by three quarter time had whittled the Eaglehawk lead down to 10 points.
The Dogs continued with their aggressive attack on the ball in the last quarter and as in the third term they kept the Hawks scoreless however in the conditions, the 10 point lead proved to be just enough with Eaglehawk hanging on to win by 3 points and in the process maintain their unbeaten run. The Gisborne boys, although disappointed, should be encouraged by the fact that they were well in the game throughout and probably should have won which augers well for the rest of the year.
Jason Storie and Heath Levis both produced strong 4 quarter efforts while the O,Gorman brothers Kieren and Lachie were also very good and they were well supported by Luke Burgess and Russ Nightscales.
Goals – N.Johnson, J.Carroll, R.Comerford, J.Campbell.
Best – J.Storie, H.Levis, K.O’Gorman, L.Burgess, R.Nightscales, L.O’Gorman.
Under 18’s
Gisborne 8.9 - 57 Def Eaglehawk 1.4 - 10
On a wet, cold and miserable winters morning the Bulldogs came out of the blocks quickly and posted the first 5 majors into the wind and rain before their Eaglehawk foes showed up. Doricic was giving the followers first use of the ball and Govan, Rodgers and Greetham continually drove the ball forward to enable Scales, Bond and Lamplugh to post goals to get the Doggies started. It was at this stage that the ball became heavy and the Gisborne boys gave Eaglehawk what they wanted with the game degenerating into a hard, dour slog.
The full back line were fantastic with Andrews and Calvert spoiling at will whilst across half back, Trotta and Trickey were showing the rest of the young Doggies how to play one touch footy in the wet conditions.
Nico and Woody were happy with the overall effort, however it was noted that the Gisborne boys were sucked into the scrap a few too many times for their liking and in future, more discipline must be displayed. Considering the conditions it was a strong win although the mood was tempered quickly by the lovely, cold showers that were on offer after the game.
Goals - Scales 2, Govan 2, Crosbie, Bond, Lamplugh, Logan.
Best - Trickey, Glenister, Govan, Doricic, Trotta, Andrews.
