Round 9 v Kangaroo Flat
It was a mixed bag in both Football and Netball last week up at Kangaroo Flat so this week at Castlemaine will be a big round for the club.
The U18's got back on the winners list with a big win over a young and inexperieced Kangaroo Flat. For three quarters the boys were good however in the last quarter, we went away from our team rules and Flat began to get into the game which was a bit disappointing. Diciplined four quarter team orientated efforts are what will be needed against the good sides so we need to get back to that this week. Nick Doolan was best which is a reflection of the hard work he puts in on the track and he was well supported by Trent Crosbie, Liam Rodgers, Jye Tebble, Matt Wilson and Shannon Rooth.
The Reserves started well holding all the momentum after the first quarter but some lapses in concentration and dicipline saw Flat get back into the game in the second term and from then on it was a very tight tussle. Neither side could really break away in the second half and in the end Flat came out on top to the tune of four points. It was bitter sweet as we had a real crack but it was definately one that got away. Josh Bain was terrific as was Cal Haynes who kicked six. James Collins, Dylan McFarlane, Dann Webb and Darcy Rocard were also in the best.
The result of the senior game was a gut wrenching outcome with Flat kicking a point after the siren to win by that one solitary point. To their credit Flat hung in all day but that was in part due to our inability to hit the scoreboard at crucial times and put them away. Our endevour and application could not be questioned but we did not get the necessary reward for effort due again to innacurate kicking and just like in the Reserves game, it was one that got away. Josh Govan was given a role for the day and executed the task perfectly to be our best player while Pat McKenna, Cam Medica, Tom May, Tim Walsh and Dan weaver rounded out the best.
In the netball, it was two from five. In the A Grade grand final replay, the girls had a good 42 to Kangaroo Flat 30 win with Polly Salter being named as best. A Reserve engaged in a tough battle but were excellent, toughing it out to record a 4 goal win 34 to Flat's 30 and Louise Shultz was awarded as our best player. The B Grade girls had a tough match eventually going down 31 to Kangaroo Flat's 69 and Meghan Maddenwas best for Gisborne. The B Reserve girls were terrific again despite being beaten 77 to 30 with Annie Fitzgerald being named as our best player and in the 17/under our girls suffered their first defeat of the season to a very good Kangaroo Flat team going down 59 to 38. Melinda Luke was best player for Gisborne.
Castlemaine at Castlemaine will be tough so we will need to be at our best - "Go Dogs".
