aaaaa FOOTBALL/ NETBALL REPORT
The Maldon Football Netball Club moved its Round 1 match against Campbells Creek forward toEaster Saturday as part of the Maldon Easter Fair Events Program. The move proved successful as it provided visitors to the town with an opportunity to see a local football match and the opportunity for former resident with the chance to catch up with former team mates.
In front of a very large audience Maldon had wins in the Reserves and Senior football and all grades of netball. The only loss for the day was the Under 15’s football team who put up a brave effort against a far stronger opponent.
Football
UNDER 15’s:
Maldon: 0 – 0 0 – 0 0 – 0 0 – 2 – 2
Campbells Creek: 10 – 7 17 – 15 22 – 23 29 – 25 – 199
Goals: Nil
Best: Damien Cordell, Damian Kitchingman, Zac Folwell, Conor Douch, Beau Brackley, Isaiah Hartley.
With a number of players away for the holidays and others awaiting clearances the Under 15’s were only able to field a team of 14 players Against a taller and stronger opponent the very young Bombers played their hearts out and were not afraid to make a contest of the one sided match.. The team had their share of the play but against a taller backline could not capitalize on their moves forward. Damien Cordell contested well in the ruck and had his fair share of the hit outs. Despite their smaller frames Damian Kitchingman and Zac Folwell were also outstanding players.Given that the majority of the players are Under 13 years of age they preformed very well and will get better.

The Reserves got their season off to a great start with a big win over Campbells Creek. Maldon dominated all around the ground and was able to shut the opposition out of the game. Maldon full forward Chris Cassidy presented well and was the teams’ focal point in front of goal. Jamie Cox led the Maldon defence which cut off the Creeks forward moves. He also followed the ball down field to finish off with three goals. Overall it was a strong team performance Jason Runnalls made a welcome return to football after a year out due to injury and was prominent throughout the game.

Campbells Creek was confident that its’ recruitment campaign would see it take the points over Maldon but the Bombers had other ideas. Creek kicked the opening goal of the match but Maldon responded with four quick goals to open up a three goal lead.. Late in the quarter Creek came back with two goals to reduce the margin to seven points at the first break
The start of the second quarter saw Creek again kick the opening goal but then Maldon took the initiative kicking the next five goals to open up a 33 point lead half way through the quarter. Late in the quarter Creek kicked two goals but at the main break Maldon led by 30 points.
From the opening bounce to start the third quarter Maldons Kyle Winstanley gathered the ball and shot a slick hand pass to Tommy Horne, who was playing his first game of Senior football and he kicked truly on the run. Maldon continued to control the play and at the end of the third quarter had increased its lead to 37 points.
The match was a test of endurance with both sides tackling hard and it was no place for the faint hearted. In the final quarter Maldon responded each time Creek kicked a goal and as had been the case throughout the game was able to outscore the Creek. Maldon ran out comfortable winners by 50 points.. Campbells Creek are a vastly improved side and will trouble other sides. Maldon have room for improvement if they wish to be serious contenders.
