Weekender Notes Rd. 15 vs Congupna
Welcome everyone to Round 15 action of MFL/MNL . Special welcome to our sponsors and supporters, as well as the Congupna contingent, who are our guests today.
Last week, we travelled across the mighty Murray to take on our neighbours, the Cobram Tigers, and came away sharing the spoils.
Seniors
The Seniors were up against the undefeated league leaders and, after a great game in Round 1, everyone was expecting a close battle, with the Hawks playing some decent footy in recent weeks. Kicking into the wind, the Hawks struggled early to contain the Tigers but rallied late in the quarter to only be four goals in arrears at the first break. With weather conditions deteriorating, the Hawks needed a good second quarter and they delivered in the best way possible. For the second week running, Barooga produced an outstanding brand of footy, which not only got them back into the game, but gave them a very handy lead going into the orange break. Everyone was contributing and the defensive phase of the boys’ game was A1!!! Eight goals to zero resulted in the Hawks having a commanding 27 point lead. The third started off sensationally with a quick goal extending the lead for Barooga and the Hawks’ fans were confident of a great victory. The Tigers had other ideas, slowly pegging the margin back before the boys managed another goal towards the end of the quarter to hold onto a handy 17 point advantage. The last brought back memories of the first round loss as Cobram, although kicking into the breeze, fought back to have the majority of play. Instead of kicking long, the Hawks were starting to overuse the footy and this allowed opportunities to arise for the Tigers. Once they sorted themselves out, the Hawks went back to playing the footy that had got them into such a great position and the last 15 minutes saw them peppering the goals and close out the game with a 20 point victory. In doing so, the Hawks inflicted Cobram first defeat for the season and keep the Courier Shield for another 12 months. A super effort from each and every one of the Hawks! Special mention too of the sacrifice the team is making (including the coach!!), as the whole squad has committed to “Dry In July” and it is certainly proving beneficial with their past two wins!!! Rock played the ultimate skipper’s game, marshalling the troops and leading by example. Plappy was fantastic across half forward and revelled in the conditions (probably brought back memories of his Tassie days!!!) and Magic, Hydey, Robbo and Pinny reproduced the form that we are starting to become very familiar with as they have been doing it week in, week out. Let’s continue our great work this week against the Road, leaving nothing in the tank with the bye coming up.
Reserves
What a disappointing result! After leading for the majority of the day, the boys couldn’t hold on and went down narrowly by four points. The first and third quarters, when the Hawks had the aid of the breeze, would come back to haunt the boys in the end. Plenty of opportunities but couldn’t get them through the big sticks. A win this week will be imperative if the boys are to have any chance of playing finals footy!!! Micky Connors made a welcomed return to the fray and he was well supported by the cagey old fox in Jono. Col and Xav were terrific down back, Josh McGaw was sensational on the wing and Azza produced another solid game.
U17
Well done to the boys on a magnificent win!!!! Not much separated the two teams all day long and a spirited last quarter, where the Hawks were kicking into the wind, saw them prevail! Would’ve been nice rocking up to school this week and catching up!!! Nothing sweeter than letting your Cobram mates know who came out on top! In the end, it was only 3 points the difference, which makes the Hawks’ win even more memorable. Buff, Bryce, Mitch, Rhino, Jake and Artie were the pick of a very even bunch of committed footballers! Great stuff lads!!
U14
The U14s rocked up to freezing conditions and some of them took a while to thaw out! Coming up against one of the better sides in the comp, the little fellas tried their best but were simply overwhelmed by the bigger bodies and competent skills. When the final whistle blew, it was Cobram victorious by 102 points. Tom Creenaune was adjudged the Hawks’ best, along with Cal, Jye, Hary, Harrison and Lachie Coburn.
Netball:
11 under. Good start by the girls, 1 up at quarter time. Lost touch as the game progressed but showed their usual enthusiasm. It’s great to see the improvement of all the girls. Well done! Barooga 7 Cobram 16
12 under. A very competitive game with Barooga out to good leads only to be reeled in by a well supported Cobram outfit. Strong defensive work from Jessie and Phoebe, and cool shooting from Steffi brought the vital win. The girls are currently 2nd on the ladder and doing a fantastic job each week. Barooga 23 Cobram 19
13 under. Well done girls! A huge win over the 2nd placed Cobram. Great passing and slick teamwork finished off by Georgia and Hannah in the ring. Coach Foster will be wrapped with that effort from across the pond. Few more before the end of the years please girls. Barooga 21 Cobram 16
15 under.
Barooga 15 Cobram 24
17 under. The highlight of the day was the 17s recording their 2nd win of the year. After an incredibly close game all day, Barooga finished well to get up by 2 goals. Great coaching by Steph to get the girls up for a win. Barooga 25 Cobram23.
C grade. This game followed the trend of earlier games with numerous lead changes. Barooga were up by 3 at 3 quarter time but went down by 1. Well done Bernie, who coached her 3rd game for the day. Chins up girls! Finals action beckons with a strong finish. Barooga 29 Cobram 30
B grade. A tight tussle, Barooga had a slight edge for most of the day. Theresa and Kristy worked tirelessly in defence to keep Cobram’s scoring in check. The win keeps the girls in the six. Nice work by the coach, who was able to watch the netball and footy at the same time. Barooga 32 Cobram 26
A grade. This was always going to be a tough game with Cobram high on the ladder. As with every Cobram vs. Barooga match, the contest was even early on. Cobram pulled away in the second half to record a good win. Barooga 27 Cobram 44
Good luck this week against the Road, who have a number of their teams well placed in the six. Let’s show some HAWKS pride and bring home some big wins.
Go the Maroon and Gold!!!
