Today we travel across the river to take on the Cobram Tigers, who are sitting pretty on top of the ladder. Hopefully we will be able to turn the tables on the close loss from Round 1. Thanks to all those who supported the Sportsman’s Night. From all reports, the speakers were great value, especially Keka, who had the crowd in raptures! This followed an average day over at Moama, with the Seniors having a fantastic victory in the footy and the U12’s, U13’s and C Grade having wins in the netball.
Seniors
A win in the Senior game was imperative if the boys’ finals hopes were to remain alive. The first quarter saw them kicking into a 3 goal win and the Hawks definitely didn’t have the start they wanted. The Magpies were all over the boys like a bad rash and jumped out to a 5 goal lead before the Hawks settled and scored a late goal. They faced a 25 point deficit. After a slow start to the second stanza, where the ball was going from end to end in the first five minutes, it was the Hawks who exploded! As a unified pack, the Hawks produced their best quarter of footy to not only reel in the difference but surge ahead the Mowers at the half-time break. Seven goals to one saw the Hawks leading the game by 16 points. The game was won in the third where the Hawks stuck to their guns to outmuscle Moama. Although having the wind advantage, peppering them, weren’t able to apply the pressure they were hoping for. Barooga were able to kick 3 goals of their own and outscore Moama, maintaining a healthy 18 point lead. So the stage was set for the Hawks to come home on the back of the breeze and half-way through the quarter, it looked as though they were going to have an easy victory. Spectacular marks from Rock and Harvs, both capped off with goals, saw the advantage blow out to 5 goals. To the credit of the Mowers, they made a late surge and got to within a couple before the siren rang, presenting the Hawks as 15 point victors. Harvs was at his brilliant best, snagging 5 and doing a fantastic job for the entire game. Crappy made a welcomed return to the fray and didn’t disappoint with a solid display across half-back and in the midfield. Robbo was sensational down back, being a major factor in getting the Hawks across the line with a magnificent defensive display. Pinny continued his consistent mid-season form with another polished performance, Rock was productive down back and when moved forward in the final period and Stuey was the main reason the Hawks got themselves back in the game with his hard, straight running splitting the packs and driving the Sherrin Barooga’s way. Huge game today as they take on the undefeated Tigers where continued success will be just the recipe to drive the Hawks to September action!!
Reserves
After a solid first quarter, where the Hawks shut down the scoring opportunities of the Mowers, it was all one way traffic. Unfortunately it wasn’t the Hawks directing it!!!! They were totally outplayed by a very good side, which had dominant players across the park, and were held goal-less for the first time in ages!!!! The boys are running out of chances to take part in finals and will need to win today to have any hope! Jas Connor was someone who could hold his head high, giving everything to get the Hawks over the line. He was supported by Jono, Wangas (Liam Ryan in his first appearance since shoulder reconstruction), Jay, Xav and Azza. Let’s get behind Hazard and the boys in their quest for finals’ glory!!!
U17s
The boys’ winning bubble finally burst and they only have themselves to blame. For the majority of the game, the boys played right into the hands of the Mowers, allowing them easy passage to a handy 6 goal lead before storming home in the last to fall only 3 goals short. Against the better sides of the comp, the boys need to recognise that playing one or two good quarters of footy will not get you over the line. There is a strong belief that if Mick’s boys put in four quarter efforts consistently, their ladder position would be a lot higher than what it is. Sammy J, Artie, Mitch, Byrce, Matt F and Jake continued to fight all day in attempting to register the boys’ sixth consecutive win but it was little avail. A win against Cobram today would be a great redeemer for last week’s effort!!!
U14s
A slow first half, in getting out of the blocks quickly, was the only thing standing between the fledglings and another victory. If the Hawks had of played the entire game like they did in the second half, they would have come away with a great victory. Something to learn from and build on!!!! A couple of more victories to end the year on a positive would be a great way to finish the season, starting with the Tiger boys today. Lachie W., Cal L-D, Hary, Harrison, Lachie C. and Jye were considered their side’s best players in a terrific effort that nearly brought home the chocolates.
