Round 12 Weekender notes
Welcome to our sponsors, supporters and visitors from Tongala.
Big night for the club with the annual BFNC Club Ball taking place. Hopefully having a number of good wins today will be the recipe for a great night to be had by all. Please make sure you support this function as it is always a fantastic evening!
SENIORS
They say a week is a long time in footy and, hopefully, the boys will have learnt from last week’s debacle and are looking to redeem themselves today against the Blues. With the inclusion of ex Richmond and St. Kilda player, Justin Plapp, to the playing ranks, via the Local interchange permit, allowing him to fulfil duties with Box Hill plus have a kick of the kangaroo hide with the Hawks, signs were promising. Stuey Galloway made his return to Senior footy, after a couple of strong performances in the Ressies and Tom Butler received his promotion from the U17s and registered his first Senior game! Well done, Tom. Another U17 in Sam Jenkins, came in as well, and congratulations to him in playing his 100th club game. With all in place, the boys needed to put it into actions against a Rumba side that had only registered one victory for the year. The first quarter saw a see-sawing spectacle, with neither side being able to assert any authority. The footy was going from end to end, without many results coming from the forward thrusts and, in a low scoring affair, it was Rumbalara who took a slender 5 point lead into the break.
From that point onwards, the Hawks were simply outplayed by a side that ran and used the ball more effectively. Too many missed tackles allowed the Rumba boys to play their free-flowing run on game, leaving the Hawks flat footed. Once their confidence was up, the Hawks had no way to counter-acting this. The clearances from the centre were where the game was won, with Rumbalara dominating these from the second quarter onwards. A disappointing result, which was unexpected and the Hawks will now have to bust their boiler to make finals, with today’s game against Tonny of the utmost importance, as this is followed by Moama, Cobram, Congupna, Deni, Finley, Mulwala and Toc. So the scene is set and only the players can act it out........wonder how it will finish? Only time will tell! Rory is fast adapting to being back in the game and showed what he is capable of. Rowdy continued his purple patch of form with another solid effort across half-back. Plappy, in his first game for the club, produce a good performance, being a focal point down forward. Robbo’s presence down in the last line of defence prevented the scoreline from blowing-out even further, Hydey gave another good account of himself and Pinny came into calculations with a strong performance across half-forward, where he took many good grabs.
RESERVES
Another away game and another last quarter fade-out! For three quarters, the boys played a great game but, unfortunately, couldn’t maintain it, going down by 26 points. Great to see the old warrior, Jono, still producing the goods. He was well supported by Leigh Adkins, Jay Nye, Col Ross, Xav Hunt and Nick Quinane. Today’s game will still keep the boys in contention if they can grab the four points.
U17s
The boys continued their mid-season form with another hard fought win. Leading for the majority of the game, the Hawks were challenged in the last and it looked as though the Rumba boys had got up by 4 points (according to the scoreboard). After a victory song and a tirade from Coach Dunn, the boys were informed that the scoreboard was wrong and they had won by 2 points!!!!! You could imagine the surreal situation!!!!!! Anyway, in the end, the boys were probably lucky to get away with this but a win’s a win and they still keep the glimmer of hope still flickering. Cal Brooks, Tom Currie, Ben Sim, Sean Barnett, Ryan Welch and Braydon Smith shone for Barooga.
U14s
The U14s recorded their second victory for the year, producing a super team performance. Today they could make it three if they come to play! The big guns of the side were firing with Caleb Brooks, Cal Leighton-Daly, Hary Foster, Lachie Wright and Tom Creenaune all leading their younger teammates to victory.
Netball
A grade: 27-43 A good win to Rumba. The team tried hard but we were down early and never really threatened. Taylah played really well in centre and Sarah had a top game in defence.
B grade: 41-39 Pulled out a massive comeback win, from 6 down with a quarter to go. Great goaling by Jackie and Caitlyn in the last quarter, rewarding great defence work all over the court
C grade: 51-21 A dominate performance in all positions. Slick passing and team work had the girls well up all day.
C Res: 55-35 A good percentage boosting win to keep in touch with the top teams. Julie Adkins had another top game in the ring. All court pressure was a highlight
Under 17: 21-27 A close game for our girls. Gave Rumba a good lead early, but Barooga hung in well to chip away and have the better last half. Nice defensive work by Samantha and Mikaylah to keep Rumba to 27
Under 15: 14-33 Tough game for our girls against a team one game off the top of the ladder. A good effort.
Under 13: 11-25 A disappointing result as a win would have pushed us closer to the six. Keep your chins up and head in for the second efforts.
Under 12: 33-21 A closer game than the scores indicate, with our girls only 1 goal up at ½ time. A very good second half sent the game Barooga’s way. Great game by Olivia at WA and Emma was everywhere at GA. Great team effort
Under 11: 2-7 Our huge squad of 11’s tried hard but couldn’t get their second win. All the girls should be proud of the way they handle sometimes only getting half a game each. Plenty of smiles and laughter, which is what we need to see at this level!
So the scene is set for a great day against the Blues. See you at the footy!!!
C’mon Hawks!!!
