Weekender Notes Rd. 17 vs Deniliquin
A couple of things to mention before getting onto the local content. The club extends its sympathies to the Vandermeer family on the passing of Robbie, who played in a couple of flags with the Fourths in ’87 and the undefeated ’88 side. At the age of 36, he was taken way too early and, hopefully, the big fella has plenty of good fish for him to catch. On a brighter note, congratulations to Shane Harvey on making the NSW side for the Country championships held in Canberra. Always nice to receive recognition for your efforts and given the opportunity to play against the best in country Australia. The side, consisting of 5 MFL players, ended up in 5th position.
A week off to freshen up and the Hawks will be looking to put on a good show for all their sponsors and supporters this week against the Rams. Welcome to all the mentioned parties to Round 17 of the MFL/ MNL Premiership season.
A couple of weeks ago, we came up against the Road at home and they had the better of us on the day. We came out of the contests with one win in the footy and 2 wins in the netball. Let’s make sure we give a great account of ourselves and come away with the ledger in our favour.
Seniors
Coming off their great win against the Tigers, the boys were full of confidence and looking to cement their top six position with a win against Congupna. The game was evenly poised at the end of the first stanza before the Hawks unleashed their customary 2nd quarter onslaught. For the 3rd consecutive week, Barooga played outstanding football to blow the game apart with a 10 goal avalanche. The 9 point quarter time advantage had suddenly blown out 59 points at ½ time. The game petered out to be fairly even after that but the damage had already been done. The Hawks went on to record a comfortable 91 point victory, which saw them jump into 5th spot on the ladder. They will be looking to test themselves today against the Rams, who are currently 6th with only percentage separating the two teams. Hydey was back to his brilliant, unrelenting best and Plappy continued his solid form, being a pillar of strength in the forward 50m. Robbo once again proved a thorn in Congupna’s attacking forays and Harvs is relishing his role with a couple of bigger bodies around him. Crappy played another customary blinder and Stuey was at his bulldozing best.
Reserves
The Reserves opportunity to play in another finals series might be over with their last round lost to the Road. At the end of the day, they will look back and think about what might have been. For the second consecutive week, the boys had more scoring shots than the opposition but fell short by a couple of goals. In the end, it was a commendable loss, with everyone giving their all. Josh McGaw, Azza, Jono, Nick Quinane, Jamo and Joffa Elleray were the pick of a committed bunch.
U17
The boys were right in the game up to ¾ time. It was a very even 1st half, which could have blown out in the 3rd but thanks to some Congupna inaccuracy, the Hawks still had a show. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be as the Road stormed home in the last to win well by 50 points. Sammy J was great all day and he had some great support from the likes of Riley B, Bryce, Mitch, Pete C and Will Robinson. Task doesn’t get any easier this week against the league leaders but what a win it would be if the Hawks could get up. Good luck boys!
U14
No mercy rule for the young Hawks as they battled gallantly against a rampant Congupna side. After a competitive first quarter, it was all one way traffic as the Road went on to record a massive a 140 point victory. Keep at it boys! Wasn’t doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger. Let’s give a good account of ourselves against Deni and turn the tables. The usual culprits again featured in the best, with Hary, Lachie W and Cal leading by example. Harrison Evans, Noah Brooks and Ethan Leighton-Daly also provided supporting roles in trying to lift the young Hawks to greater heights!
Netball
All the Netball teams faced some very tough Congupna teams, most of which are well placed for finals action.
A Grade. A very exciting game to watch! Congupna slipped away to an early lead but strong play all over the court had the girls within 2 goals late in the game. Tayla and Sharni played some great netball in the ring. The whole team played some of their best netball of the year. Barooga 49 Congupna 53
B Grade. A disappointing loss against the ladder leaders. Barooga lead for most of the first half only to drop their guard to be level at half time. It was goal for goal and still close to full time. A couple of late goals to Congupna made the difference. Great effort girls. Our best is good enough to push anyone. Great defensive game by Kath at WD and Mrs Green at GK. Barooga 39 Congupna 43
C Grade. A red hot Congupna team had us well down early and despite the best efforts of Rocky Wright and Bernie Balboa the gap was never bridged. Let’s move on and look to the next game to keep the chance of finals action alive. Barooga 29 Congupna 44
C reserve. A great win by the girls, had the game under control the whole game, Congupna did come back but the margin was well under control. A great game by Amy in defense. This was an important win as it keeps the team 4th on the ladder. Barooga 43 Congupna 34
17 Under. A game that could have been won but the girls gradually fell further behind as the day went on. Congupna played well. Nice work to keep the score to 37. It is great to see the girls play with great energy, regardless of the score. Barooga 13 Congupna 37
15 Under. A tough day for the girls. Congupna played a physical game and executed well to come away with a good win. Barooga 18 Congupna 43
13 Under. A tight, low-scoring game with plenty of intense defence at both ends. Barooga had plenty of chances but couldn’t convert them into goals. Hannah played a very athletic game and was all over the court. Well done girls with Congupna 2nd on the ladder it was always going to be a tough game. Barooga 16 Congupna 29
12 Under. Another good win to the girls. Barooga was off to a good lead thanks to Caitlyn, Jessie and Phoebe producing good rebounds and turn-overs. Abbey and Olivia were too elusive for their opponents and, at half time, had the team well up. Congupna produced a great quarter to have Barooga only 4 goals up at 3 quarter time. Steffi and Emma produced one of their best quarters of the year to bring in an 13 goal win. Well done to Tammika, who played her first game of 12’s and played with great confidence. Barooga 32 Congupna 19
11 Under. The girls have been playing some Friday night games against Cobram to help them convert training into game play. There are 13 in the squad and each of them play their hearts out against some much taller opponents. Their last quarter was brilliant! Well done girls.
Good luck to all teams today! With only 4 games to go, let’s make the most of the opportunities presented and finish of the season on strong notes!!!
We are Maroon and Gold, a fighting fury!!!!!
