Weekender notes Rd. 20 vs. Tocumwal
Barooga Weekender notes Rd. 20
Well here we are! The concluding game of the 2010 MFL/MNL seasons is upon us and hard to believe it has all eventuated so quickly. Today we find ourselves opposed to the nearest NSW neighbours, the Tocumwal Bloods. All the best to the Hawks’ sides today! If this is your side’s last game for the year, let’s make sure we finish on a high note and complete the season off with a win. Thanks for your efforts over the season, in attempting to keep the mighty Hawks flying above and beyond the other teams of the competition. To all those sides continuing, let’s use today as a stepping stone in preparation for productive finals campaigns. A couple of flags would be nice back at the Nest!!!! Belated congratulations to former Premiership player, Mick Chisholm, who notched up his 300th Senior appearance last week. Great effort!
Seniors
As predicted, this game went right down to the wire. After a slow start, courtesy of a 5 goal breeze, the Hawks had to play catch-up. The Lions came out and used this advantage effectively, belting the Hawks to take a considerable lead into the ¼ time break. Not to be outdone, the Hawks set about reeling in the 40 point deficit and dominated proceedings in the 2nd. Harvs was on fire, booting 4 and finishing off the good work being done further up the field. The Hawks overtook the Lions and went into the long interval with an impressive 9 point lead. This could have been greater if the boys had of been on target as they wasted a few opportunities in front of goal, snagging 8.8 to 1.1. For the first 15 minutes of the 3rd, Barooga did a great job to withhold the Lions’ use of the wind. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to maintain this and a couple of late goals to James saw the Mulwala lead blow out to 4 goals. Supporters were confident that with the breeze at their backs, the Hawks would be able to overcome this. The Lions had other ideas though and totally dominated the first 10 minutes of the final stanza, kicking 4 and blowing their lead out to about 8 goals!!!! This left even Mulwala fans stunned and unable to comprehend the ease with which their side was dominating the contest (although they would have been very happy about it!). The Hawks rallied and a late flurry of goals got them back into the game. A dubious decision when Magic marked on the goal-line, played on and kicked what looked to be a certain goal was disallowed by the man in white, suggesting it was touched, turned the momentum back in the Lions’ favour and they held on to win by 7 points! Although Barooga lost the game, they had two more scoring shots and were missing several key players. With this all said and done, it shows that if the boys don’t come with a 4 quarter effort of the highest standard, the better sides can capitalise on this. Today they take on the reigning premiers, who if given opportunities and not treated with the utmost of respect, have the capability of causing an upset. Good luck boys! Clarkey returned to his early season form and did a great job on nullifying the influence of Hargreaves. Hilly continued on with his impressive late season form, as did Rock (super job on Dylan Robinson). Robbo was brilliant down back and Muscles also played his tagging role to perfection. Harvs rounded off the best with another polished display down forward and closing in on the elusive ton (16 to go).
Reserves
With Jono, Knuckles and Nick Q. all calling it a day and presenting themselves for the last time on the rec reserve, the Hawks were urged to put in an effort which would make these guys proud. Although the Hawks came up 50 points short, they gave it everything they had but couldn’t get over their more accomplished opponents. Let’s finish today on a high and send these 3 blokes into retirement on a big win!!! Hayesy made it through a full game and showed why he will come into Senior calculations if the body stays together. He was well supported by the 3 O’s; Flanno, Jamo and Jono. Col and Knuckles rounded off the best.
U17s
In a see-sawing contest, the boys played an inspiring game to fall 3 goals short of a team above them on the ladder. The boys came home with a wet sail and put a scare through the Lions but couldn’t make up the head start they had given Mul. Tom B, Ben, Mitch, Sam G, Davo and Sammy J all tried valiantly and were gallant in defeat. Let’s finish the season off with a good win today!
U14s
What a ripper!!! The Hawks held on for grim death and got home by the barest of margins! This was nearly blown in the 3rd, when the boys, kicking with the wind, could only manage 5 behinds. They responded in the best possible manner, playing inspirational footy in the last to scrape home by a point! The victory song was a rousing rendition. Dion Metzner was sensational all day and his partners in crime were Cal L-D, Jake J, Lachie W, Harrison and Daniel J. Today sees the boys come up against the young Blooders and a win would be a great way to exit the season!
Netball
Netball was a bit dismal today with only one win for the day being the Under 12’s.
12 & UNDER Sensational game by everyone. We actually played like we did 3 weeks or more ago. Thanks Steph Humphries for filling in for us. Well done to Abbey who played a fantastic WA and won the award. Let’s keep this momentum up for our finals. Barooga 38 def Mulwala 9
13 & UNDER A very close game for these girls for their last game for 2010. Barooga 13 lost to Mulwala 15
15 & UNDER The girls played well, but Mulwala to good for them. A few minor mistakes of obstruction and contacts let the girls down. Last game today against Toc, so let’s try and finish with a win. Barooga 17 lost to Mulwala 28
17 & UNDER Another tough game for the girls. Barooga 11 lost to Mulwala 39
C RES These girls love tight games but this time it didn’t come our way. Great shooting and defence work. Everyone played well but couldn’t get it home. These girls don’t play this week so good luck in the finals. Barooga 35 lost to Mulwala 39
C GRADE – Barooga 23 lost to Mulwala 33
B GRADE It was a game that we should of won to keep our finals chances alive. We now have to make sure we win this week to be playing in the finals. Mrs. Green and Ms Primmer played fantastically in defence but we couldn’t get it to our attackers and ,when we did, we weren’t very accurate. Barooga 18 lost to Mulwala 39
A GRADE A huge thank you to Primmer for filling in for Bids and Taylah. A few injuries with Prims ankle and Wendy’s noggin, but the girls played good netball, but a few stray passes and penalties turned into goals for Mulwala. Barooga 27 lost to Mulwala 45
Don’t forget tonight is the Trivia Night/ 200 Club Draw at the Golf Club and then tomorrow is the Junior Vote Count Presentation Day/ Family Fun Day. See the Social Calendar further in the Weekender for details. Hope to see you there!
All the best and bring home the four points!
