Barooga retained the Cobram Courier Shield with a hard fought 34 point win over the Tigers last Saturday. The Reserves and Thirds also recorded wins while the Fourths copped their second shellacking in as many weeks, this time from a very good Tiger combination.
Its back to the drawing board for Mick Dunns boys after being humbled to the tune of 124 points by a very talented Cobram side. The Tiger cubs piled on 11-9 to nil in the first half and added another 7-9 to 2 points in the second half for a comprehensive win. The young Hawks will have had a torrid week on the track and will all need to fire this week to get over the Mowers.
Sam Gough has been tireless in defence and collected the Barooga Bakery award. Arty Rootsey (Barooga General Store), Daniel Russell (Outdoor Indulgence) and Matt Foster (Healthy Foods) never stopped trying while Callum Leighton Daly received the Encouragement Award. Ryan Welch also worked hard throughout the game.
What about the Thirds?? Back to back victories and the first against Cobram for quite some time had the Coach grinning for the rest of the day. The win was set up in the opening term when the Hawks booted 4-4 to no score. That 28 point lead proved to be the final margin so the boys will need to start putting together 4 quarters if they are to extend their winning run.
Sam Jenkins (Menthas) was outstanding, Zeke Bunge (Andrew Jenkins Real Estate) led by example and Hayden Atkinson-Thring (Babcon Hire) and Josh McGaw (Barooga Bakery) were dominant midfielders. Matt Connors (Barooga General Store) was as solid as usual at fullback while Adam Brewster, Tom Currie, Conor Ryan and Damian Hyde contributed throughout the game.
The Reserves went in undermanned but the inclusion of Brett Wright ensured they werent undersized!! Good to see you out there Brett, I bet you discovered a few muscles youd forgotten about!! A four goal first term lead was out to seven by half time and the boys continued to put the foot to the floor running out comfortable fifteen goal winners.
The Connors boys were great players. Sean (Bottom Pub) and Jason (Barooga Hotel) can shout each other a meal! Jason Nye (Babcon Hire) and Leigh Adkins (Barooga Sporties) were on fire and Adam Fox, Jamie Nye, Rod Lucas and Simon Douglas are all in top form.
This week Moama will test the twos out and give us a strong indication of where were at in the top of the table clash.
The seniors were pushed for four quarters by a Cobram outfit that had come to play. The Tigers were fierce at every contest and looked the better side early however the Hawks seized the initiative in the second term to lead by 31 points at the long break.
Zac Gallagher and Marty Brooks defended strongly to keep the Hawks in the game when the pressure was on while Brent Chapman was also very good.
The second half saw Cobram continue to challenge but each time they appeared to be wresting control the Hawks would hit back. Tyron Hill, Jason Biggs and Jamie Stanyer stood up and Stuey Galloway relished the run on the ball after keeping Sean Downie quiet for most of the day.
Moose and Zac took home the Major incentives, Chappy and Biggsy the Minor ones.
Harro, Chappy, Pinny and Liam booted 3 goals apiece.
The President certainly enjoyed the win and was in fine voice late on Saturday night. By Sunday night it was a different story as he sat by the river with his line snagged, croaky and at times dribbling. Nothing like rolling Cobram is there SOD?

13&U: Barooga 5 to Cobram 24 The girls had a tough battle against their rivals Cobram. With a tall attack end Cobram got away from our girls, but it was with no lack of strong defence from our girls, especially from 2 of our award winners Jackie Buchanan and Bonnie Coburn. Our team is each week, developing individual skills and determination down the entire court. It is great to see! Bridget ODywer was also an award winner against Cobram, thanks to Theresa and Barooga Bakery
15&U: Barooga 22 to Cobram 26 An up and down game. A Grade: Barooga 40 to Cobram 40 What a sensational game. This is the best game we have played so far this season and it was a real team effort. Everybody played well. Cobrams defence tightened up in the second half, allowing them to claw back our small lead. To everyones credit, we kept our heads up and played through till the end. Everyone can be proud of their efforts as we are improving every week. Keep up the great work . Bottom Pub Award went to Jodie Lake for a great game in defence and a special mention to Sharni for her first A Grade game; you played fantastic.
This week all sides face an acid test against the big improvers, Moama. Lets bring home the bacon in all grades!
