It was a long trip home from Moama last week, plenty of time for soul searching after a 37 point reality check for the Seniors. The Reserves, on the other hand, find themselves at the top of the pile and the only undefeated side by defeating the Mowers by 13 points.
Under 14
Mick Dunns U/14s got the day off to a fine start when they recaptured some winning form beating Moama by 26 points. The young Hawks came out pumped up and produced the form that had deserted them in the previous fortnight to lead 7-6 to 1-4 at the long break. They may have thought theyd done enough but the Magpies had other ideas and hit back in the third quarter. They came at the Hawks in the last quarter but the boys responded to the challenge and held on to take the 4 points.
Isaac Bunge (Barooga Bakery) was a solid contributor whether at fullback or centre half back. Caleb Brooks (Barooga General Store) was ferocious at the ball and his tackling was a feature of the game. Logan Morey (Outdoor Indulgence) picked up plenty of possessions in the midfield and Matt Plugger Demaio (Healthy Foods) booted 3 goals and dished out a few more in an impressive display at full forward. Daniel Russell and Arty Rootsey (4 goals) also played well.
Under 17
The U/17s went in undermanned with a few players unavailable due to other commitments. They were given a football lesson by Moama who played a brilliant running style of footy. The 9-2 to 0-0 quarter time scoreline had the coach livid and Frank let the players know what was expected of them. This spurred them into action and despite going down by 145 points their endeavour was much better after the first break. Riley Brooks (Menthas Award) keeps doing the hard things week in and week out and was easily best. Matty Connors (Andrew Jenkins Real Estate) continues to perform well on the last line of defence and Damian Hyde (Babcon Hire) rucked tirelessly all day. Lewis Dickson (Barooga General Store) worked hard to stem the tide as did Jamie Jack (Barooga Bakery).
Reserves
It was top versus second in the twos and the match lived up to its match of the day billing. Baroogas inaccuracy in the first half kept Moama in the game as the Hawks had six more scoring shots only to lead by 6 points at the long break. The second half was an arm wrestle but the Hawks strength proved too much for the Mowers and they ran out 13 point winners to sit at the top of the ladder undefeated.
The much anticipated return of Damian Is that really you? OCallaghan did much to dispel rumours of an appearance in the next Biggest Loser series!! A streamlined Doc didnt take long to show hell be a handy asset in the Seniors as he took out best on ground honours and the Bottom Pub Award.
Brad Herbertson (Barooga Hotel) rebounded strongly all day, Adam Fox (Babcon Hire) is getting back to his B&F form and Jason Nye (Barooga Sporties) was hard at it all day. Travis Nye and Joel Kirk continue to control the ruck and midfield respectively.
Seniors
To the Seniors and it was a game the Hawks would like to forget as turnovers and disposal errors were abundant all day. The signs were there the previous week but the quality of opposition was higher this week and Moama made us pay for our mistakes.
As Byso said after the game, we have too many players wanting to do their own thing instead of following the team rules and against good sides the penalty can be severe!!
It has to be back to basics and everyone getting their hands dirty to get back to where we want to be. Who would want to be a forward with the way the ball came in last week? Not too many thats for sure!
Moama set the trend early and continued to run the footy and hit targets and certainly showed more desire than the Hawks. On the other hand when we got the ball we refused to give the first option and bombed or turned the ball over when going forward. Consequently Moama ran out 37 point winners.
Shaun Robbins was best for the Hawks and Jason Biggs is enjoying a great start to the season. Defenders Nick Flannigan, Zane Goodwin, Moose Brooks and Rowdy Stanyer all tried valiantly but too often their hard work went unrewarded.
Auction winners against Cobram were Zac Gallagher Deb Ryan Syndicate and Sean Connors Punters Syndicate. Moama winners were Sean Robbins Dozer Brooks and Jason Nye Brett Wright Syndicate.

13/U Barooga 5 to Moama 24The girls played a great game. They moved the ball down the court like little champions, and put everything they practised at training into play. Unfortunately Moama had the advantage of height in defence, but it was a fantastic effort from our girls. Special mentions to Alli Smith and Nat Jarred who received the Barooga General Store and Theresas Awards this week.
15/U Barooga 7 to Moama 50 Although a big loss there were still some good passages of play. It is very important to stay positive no matter what the outcome. Cobram Rural Centre and Theresas Awards went to Helena and Siobhan

C Reserve Barooga 26 to Moama 19 The girls put in a solid game and capitalised on their opportunities in the ring. Tight defence and consistent pressure through the mid court was the key. Commitment to team training will ensure we keep playing good netball and keep the wins coming!! Special thanks to Hannah who filled in from the 17&U, you played a great game!
Wingates Sportz Award went to Jess Bourke and DVine Award to Joe.
C Grade Barooga 34 to Moama 32 In a well fought game, the girls came up by only a few, but to their credit played every second to their very best and played their own game. There were times when the standard was brilliant, and times where they couldnt keep that consistency- but still fought for the ball. Special mentions to Bianca for keeping her head high all game, to Jess for her fantastic intercepts, and to Jackie for her accuracy in goals. Great game girls! Fosters Wine and Barooga Bakery Award went to Jess
