The trip to Numurkah last Saturday proved very fruitful for the Hawks with 3 wins from the 4 games played.
The U/14s learnt that the old adage of A week is a long time in football certainly rings true. The big win against Toc quickly became a distant memory as the young Blues displayed the brand of football the fledgling Hawks aspire to. To their credit the boys tried hard and outscored the opposition in the final term but theyll need to be at the top of their game for 4 quarters today against a strong Tigers outfit to return to the winners list.
Ryan Welch was best and he received the Outdoor Indulgence award. Barooga Bakery Award went to Logan Morey while other award recipients were Isaac Bunge (Barooga General Store) and Troy Metzner (Healthy Foods Award). Others to play well included Sam Gough and Jake Brooks.
The highlight of the day came in the U/17s where the lads recorded their first on field win since mid season 2006. The Hawks blew the Blues away in more ways than one, setting up victory with an outstanding first half that produced 7.4 to 0.2. It was the style of footy that Frank and Jimmy have been looking for and if they can produce it week in and week out the wins will keep rolling in, well done men!! Matt Randy Connors was impenetrable at fullback and was the springboard of many attacks. He duly collected the Menthas Award. Zeke Bunge (Andrew Jenkins Award) displayed great leadership, Riley Brooks (Babcon Hire) was uncompromising across half back and Hayden Atkinson Thring (Barooga General Store) covered more ground than Jamie Currie did on his return from the Albury races! Toby Townley (Barooga Bakery) was a livewire across the half forward line and Sam Jenkins, James Leech and Lewis Dickson all played very well.
Our reserves also set up a strong win with a prominent first half that saw them up by 8 goals at the long break. A lack of match fitness saw them tire a little in the second half however well take a 10 goal victory any day. The forward line functioned very well with Rod Rocket Lucas outstanding in his first game for the Hawks. He brought many players into the game with quick hands and was rewarded with the Bottom Pubs No. 1 Award. Ben McNeill at centre half back showed he will push for senior selection this season with a great game and he received the Bottom Pub No. 2 Award. Simon Dougie Douglas (Babcon Hire) played another beauty, kicking 5 goals, and he too will push for senior selection. Travis Nye (Barooga Hotel) and Joel Kirk (Barooga Sporties) ensured the Hawks had first use of the footy by controlling the square. It was good to see Nick Quinane return to footy after a long and premature retirement. He booted a goal, got a black eye and struggled to walk Sunday!! Good to have you back, its a great game isnt it Nick?! James Boral McNeill backed up from the U/17s for his first game at senior level and acquitted himself admirably.
The seniors continued on their merry way with a resounding 82 point win over the Blues. In what was predicted to be a real test, the Hawks were never really threatened. Dominant in the middle and with our key forwards on top the lead built to 32 points by half time. A scrappy third term ended with an all in brawl that resulted in Robbo and Roundy getting yellow carded and reported. While this brought the crowd to life, Byso was not a happy man and he certainly let his charges know as he read the riot act at the break. Despite being out numbered the boys gave the Blues a football lesson, piling on 7.7 to a measly 0.1 to race away with the match. Brent Chapman and Tim ODwyer were dominant midfielders and received the Major incentive awards. Jayson Biggs and Sean Harrap (5 goals) took home the Minor incentive awards. Biggsy curbed Linc Wellingtons influence and Harro was the gun forward on the ground. Tyron One Tree Hill is in great form as is Dallas Gallagher and they have added a dimension to the Hawks and are exciting players to watch.
Dont forget money for the players auction must be paid to Greg Ryan today. Last weeks winners were Brent Chapman in the Seniors and Rod Lucas in the Reserves so the successful syndicates can collect from Grog or see Mick ODwyer
This week the Tigers venture across the river for our first home game of the season. They will be brimming with confidence after accounting for Deni in the opening round. Lets send them home with their tails between their legs!!

A Grade: Bar 32 d. Num 4. The score line doesn't show the effort put in by everyone and this effort didnt stop until the final whistle. Well done everyone for that. There were moments of brilliance and then others not so brilliant. With a new team, we are learning about each other so we will only continue to improve. Looking forward to the Cobram game. Fosters/Barooga Bakery Award: Carly Brooks.
