Second time a charm.....Taberner hoping to hear his name called as AFL stages NAB National Draft
DESPITE being overlooked as a graduate of the Murray Bushrangers last season, Bright's Matt Taberner will vie for a spot on an AFL list in tomorrow's NAB National Draft and next month's Rookie Draft.
The 19 year old started the season playing with Myrtleford and he grabbed the attention of AFL recruiters after some solid performances with the Saints, which thrust him back into the Bushrangers squad late in the TAC Cup season.
At the beginning of the year Taberner wasn't considered for one of three spots with the club as a 19 year old selection, but some eye-catching performances with the Saints and a four goal best on ground appearance with the VCFL under 19 representative side threw him back into the fray.
Taberner will tune into tomorrow's proceedings at the Gold Coast with few expectations, just pleased to be given another crack at the big time after going into 2012 with no thought of playing with an AFL club in 2013.
"I think if I am a chance to go it'll be the rookie draft," Taberner said.
"But it's hard to speculate if or where you'll go.
"I haven't set my hopes too high, because at the start of the year I wasn't even given an opportunity to get drafted and having that is good nonetheless."
Taberner's four appearances with the Bushies led him to the AFL draft combine at Ethihad Stadium, just seven days after the grand final, where he was placed against up and coming footballers looking to break into the AFL system.
