Last week the seniors had another win with Jake Cawsey playing his first senior game, unfortunately after starting strongly he went off injured early, while the reserves went down in Jamie Lovat’s 50th game for the club; also good to see Nathan Thornbury and Ricky McClusky play their first games with the club and Ben Magnay return from down the road, being named in the best. The U19’s with another three U17’s debutantes in the side, had a good win over Boronia, well done to Liam Milburn, Liam McKernan and Matthew Graham as well as Jonathon O’Carroll from Vermont playing his first game in the U19’s. After another win to the Division 4 side last Friday and a loss to the Division 5 side only the Division 4 side play this Friday at Rowville with the other side having the bye; good luck again girls. Saturday we are away again this time to Heathmont which shapes as a huge game with both sides undefeated and playing good footy. Get back to the clubrooms after the game for the Back to School function starting at 7pm. Hunter Greenall continued his great form in the U15’s kicking 9 goals last week against South Croydon. Good result for the U11’s being promoted to B and the U12’s to C after the early rounds of the season, good luck to them on Sunday as well as the other junior sides; U10, U12, U14 and U17A are at Dobson Park with the others playing away; get down to the juniors Sunday and show your support. Check out below the article in last week’s Eastern Footballer about our U9 player Noah Kidd’s battle with leukaemia; inspirational story. Great recognition for Tom Meagher who has made the EFL U19’s Interleague squad, hopefully he can make the team which plays against Geelong at Kardinia Park on May 21st. The Vets played Bayswater under lights last Friday night and with some new recruits and returning faces on show easily won by 12 goals to stay third on the ladder; next game is Sunday at Kings Park against Wantirna South. Club Memberships now available as well as Player Sponsor opportunities which includes Club Membership. Two in a row for the Vets after a great win last Friday night at Bayswater. Thanks to Bayswater for accommodating the change of weeks which allowed us to play Friday night under Lights. A good crowd in attendance and with six on the bench it was a new experience for many vets players being able to have a rest and it certainly proved beneficial to us finishing the game strongly. We had a number of new recruits, including Amir, Simon, Aaron and Rob (James Campbell’s brother) in the side as well as the first appearance for the year of Craig Bennett, James Campbell, Andy Hayman and Jeff Franken, unfortunately Andy broke down in the second quarter but the other recruits performed well with Simon kicking a goal. With Jas, Andy Lee, Craig and Jeff all playing against their last season’s teammates it made for some interesting match ups. As usual Shggga dominated the backline as well as kicking 2 goals with plenty of support from Sturter, Brad W, Chris and Josh while the midfield lead by Jas in the ruck and Casey, Mat and Brad S were providing plenty of run and giving plenty of the ball to our forwards. Bull again spearheaded the attack kicking 6 and was well supported by our new forward Saidi kicking 3 and ever reliable Justin kicking 2. We now have a short break playing again this Sunday against Wantirna South at Kings Park starting at 2:30pm.
Anyone interested in playing footy every second Sunday; then the Vets team is for you. So if anyone is interested please contact Jason Zinnow on 0411 079 829 or otherwise turn up to training on Thursday nights from 6:30pm.

HOSPITAL STAYS TO GRAND FINAL DAYS
By David McPherson (EFL Media)
Upper Ferntree Gully junior Noah Kidd isn’t afraid of the big stage, having already stepped out onto the hallowed turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground on AFL Grand Final Day. While Dobson Park is almost a world away from the towering stands of the MCG, it meant just as much to Noah to step out onto its grassy expanses with his friends for his first game of football. Things haven’t been easy for Noah and his family in recent times, as he was diagnosed with leukemia in January of 2014. His father Jeff has been alongside Noah for every step of the journey, and according to his dad (Jeff) so has football. “When he was in hospital all he wanted to do was play footy and run around, so when Auskick came along he got into it straight away “The first 12 months it was pretty horrible, there were a lot of hospital visits and illness and whatnot, but two years down the track he’s looking good.” While illness did it’s best to keep Noah down, the current Upper Ferntree Gully Under 9 had other ideas. “It was always a bit hard because his body wasn’t keeping up to it, and he’d want to participate because all kids do at school is run around and kick the footy, “Probably late last year he really started to pick up his energy and enthusiasm and started to be a little boy again, wanting to get in and play cricket and run around and kick the footy.” his dad said. Throughout the treatment process football has provided a great outlet to Noah and his dad, who coaches at the local Auskick centre. “Auskick has given him something to really have a crack at, something to look forward to on the weekends,” Jeff Kidd said. “It’s always been hard to keep him down because when he was sick he always wanted to get up and play, he’s very determined.” Noah’s determination has also been noticed by junior club president Bob McLachlan. “He’s a great kid, really polite and well-mannered, and yeah he’s also really determined. Noah is a dead keen footballer so he’s always keen to get down to the club.” he said. Noah has a passion for the game that stems from his father and two brothers. “His older brother would be out there playing, and even when Noah was too young to play he’d just go running out there and join in,” father Jeff said. “We’d always watch the footy on the couch on weekends or Friday nights and he’d always be in the background or watching it with me.” This passion for the game made the opportunity to carry last year’s AFL Grand Final match ball out onto the ground before the bounce even more special. Jeff Kidd still remembers the moment he got a phone calling telling him of the news. “Initially when we went into the Monash Cancer Center they had some great support services and we signed-up for a few things,” he said. “I remember I got a phone call when I was at work and Camp Quality rang up and said that they had a good opportunity for us.” “They explained they had two grand final tickets for us and I said ‘oh that’s great’, but then they told me Noah had been selected to carry out the ball on Grand Final Day. It was a great opportunity.” Noah has been a force to be reckoned with in the first few rounds, even with his dad and coach Darren Powers doing their best to hold him back. “His energy levels can be not too great, he has a bit of a short tank because he’s still on a lot of chemo medication and things so his body is still recovering and getting better,” Noah’s father said. Despite this meaning that Noah is rested in the forward pocket and has to spend time in defense, he has been amongst the goals early, kicking five in the first two rounds. “Playing as a forward is my favourite position, I love kicking goals,” Noah said. The goal-scoring forward who wears the number 32, idolises North Melbourne’s Jack Ziebell but was unable to snare his number seven in the scramble to allocate jumpers. Noah has been a part of a couple of unofficial victories for Upper Gully this year, with junior president Bob McLachlan all-too-aware of the results. “There’s no scoring in the under-nines obviously but the team’s having a lot of positive draws, they’re winning by about a hundred points every week at the moment,” he said.
Editor’s Note - Following the publication of the story in last week’s Eastern Footballer, Noah (who was too ill to compete) and his Upper Gully Under 9's competed in the Lightning Premiership. Winning three out of their four games, losing the last by a point to narrowly miss out on being crowned champions.
Upper Gully Buddy System
This year we are rolling out our buddy system between our Under 17's and senior players, this program has been established to continue to improve the transition from junior to senior footy at Upper Ferntree Gully. The program will consist of our senior players presenting their buddy with their jumper for the season at a jumper presentation night held this Friday following that the seniors will be attending at least 2 of the boys games throughout the year and also our senior buddies will be present for one of the junior family nights. outside of this the buddies can communicate with each other as mentors and provide advice for the boys to aid in their development on and off the field. The program will no doubt evolve over the year paving the way for years to come.

The Modern Game
Upper Gully Football Club has yet again employed the services of Craig Winter from ‘The Modern Game’. 2016 will be the 7th year that Craig or as he is commonly known as Crackers will be involved with this club. We would be one of the very few football clubs that would have this level of commitment to supporting the coaches. ‘The Modern Game’ provides a Coaches Development program to support junior coaches and the players in their football journey. ‘The Modern Game’ philosophy and mission is to educate coaches, via their robust coaching framework, that junior football is not all about scoreboard results, it is about teaching, developing and improving the children with their sporting skills and their general life skills. If the focus is on these areas, the ‘results’ elements will look after themselves. Craig will again hold Coaching workshops which our coaches will attend, every coach will be provided coaching resources to assist in areas such as planning training sessions and other relevant tools, he will also be available to assist in training sessions. He will also observe our coaches on game day and provide verbal and written feedback on areas that were well handled and areas where they can in improve in their coaching performance. We would be one of the only EFL clubs that would go that level in assisting and improving our Junior Coaches.
The Modern Game is again looking forward to supporting the club, and specifically the coaches, to further develop their skill and knowledge and enhance their coaching journey. After consultation with all parties, we agree that the current format of the program provides the outcomes the club is looking for and hence we will continue to provide the following: Structure and support to facilitate coaching interviews, 4 x Pre-season coaching workshops, Age Specific Coaching Folders provided to each Coach, 1:1 Mentoring/Tuition for individual coaches, Regular visits and practical support at training sessions, Game Day observations & feedback, Additional support with club requirements (ie. Policies, etc.)
Once again the focus of the program and partnership will be to ensure external and ongoing support is provided to each coach as often as needed. While many of the coaches are at different stages of their journey, past years’ suggest they all benefit from: Tips to prepare & improve your training session, Young player development, Age specific training programs, Player Assessments to track improvement, Skill acquisition and remediation advice, Skills to coach resilience & manage expectation.
