WPL Reserves Team News

NTC U15's Vs South Melbourne WPL Reserves 2/8/14
This afternoon saw South's young reserve team versing another young team in NTC, this was a fantastic opportunity for all the squad to display their abilities but especially for Ruby McCloskey, Renee Laszczak, Emmanuelle Fierro who are all eligible to be representing the NTC team.

This was always expected to be a very technically based match with NTC regulations enforcing a pass and move theosophy, but also Head Coach Matthew Maslak who bases our Reserve teams performances on the ethos of keeping the ball on the floor and playing the ball to feet.

From the start the tempo was high, both teams playing quite frantic with opposites vying for domination. With transition of possession been very prominent Head Coach Maslak altered the formation, adopting a central three trio of Emily Heijden, Ruby McCloskey and Holly Davey, after this brief period our girls started to relax and display the football that has become familiar with this group, two players Emily Heijden and Holly Davey in particular having major roles in remaining possession for the team.

The first goal went the way of our visitors, after attempting to keep possession in the back line and with no options forward, the decision was made to recycle the ball back to the goal keeper, unfortunately a mistake led to losing possession and leaving an easy finish for the opposition attacker.

Our girls reaction was positive, continuing to pass the ball and creating attacking opportunities. In fact conceding the goal led to the team using possession in a better way than prior to the goal, this was encouraging to Coach Maslak due to as mentioned before the squad is very young and in the early stages of their footballing development.

South took only 5 minutes to level the game, Head Coach Maslak describing the goal as potentially the best football move of the game. The ball being in possession of at least 7 players during the passing move, starting with midfielder Emily Heijden but with no passing options forward Emily decided to switch play to opposite left winger Emanuella Fierro. As mentioned the ball made its way through a number of players before finding striker Tijen Hussien, Tijen showing great strength and ability to link the midfield into the attack, combination play through Tijen and Renee Laszczak which resulted in a strike inside the 18 yard area and an equalising goal.

At this stage the game was certainly in a balance, neither team was controlling the main share of possession however South's girls were certainly creating more of an attacking threat.

Again with another unfortunate error in possession resulted in a second goal for the opposition, the first half ended at this 1-2 scoreline.

In the half time period Coach Maslak enthused the point of how vital retaining possession was, having conceded two goals from the lack of the point made!! However, the message was left on a positive as he also said that the girls had displayed some good passages of ball play. Another point from half time was to create more educated pressing in high areas, the girls were asked to work in groups of 4/5 players when pressing in the opposition first third and set the task of winning possession within 6 seconds or 3 passes.

Second half again started off in the same manor as the first, but as Coach Maslak's instructions from half time was to press high then win possession. It was good to see the girls taking on board instruction.

With the girls beginning to take full control of the game, an equalising goal was only a matter of when and not if.. Holly Davey and Emily Heijden really began to enforce pressure on the opposite midfield and with dominating majority of the possession it was expected that both of them would have a large part to play in creating the equalising goal.

Tijen Hussien working with Holly and Cassie Semple to create high pressure, which resulted in many transitions of possession from the visiting team and leading to plenty of goalscoring attempts, with the opposition goalkeeper making fantastic goalscoring saves South were really producing a encouraging performance.

As expected the goal came, again good link play from striker Tijen Hussain and Cassie, Holly, Renee led to the goal.

With south in the ascendancy the girls provided opportunities at regular stages, our girls should really have taken the the lead in the game but with an outstanding performance from the opposition goalkeeper south girls couldn't make the pressure and attempts created count.

Post game comments from Head Coach Matthew Maslak were positive, he expressed how the half time points were implemented in the game and with the girls creating regular chances it was a positive performance.

Adding, with the reputation the visitors have as being the superior and been the place to be, playing good passing football, it was good for our girls to play in a way that wasn't affected by the opposition and especially happy to see the girls could do more than hold their own with possession and ball skills.

Head Coach Maslak handed special praise to Tijen Hussein, Emily Heijden and Elle Guilliano all providing positive performances which will be surely featuring in senior football in the coming weeks.

SMWFC Vs Bulleen 6th July

Today's game at the state training centre in Darebin was a eagerly anticipated match up between second placed Bullen Lions and our third placed girls. With recent performances providing Head Coach Matthew Maslak with a large sense of anticipation and excitement to face another strong team.

Coach Maslak speaking before the game of what a fantastic opportunity for our young group of girls to provide a performance and display to really send out a message to the rest of the league, a message that South Melbourne has a group of players that have potential and a large willingness to learn and improve on their already developing abilities. This then providing the realisation that the future of our club lays with these players.

The game started off is the usual fashion, our girls controlling possession and continuously playing the ball from GK and through midfield, this is vast contrast the more brash and one directionally minded play from Bullen.

Clearly the tactics adopted from Bullen were to create high pressure against our girls, however our girls not being fazed through this and providing constant passing options from GK to midfield.

Elif Yilmaz, Deryel Aziz, Holly Davey and under 16 Emanuella Fierro all sharing the responsibilities of being the starting point of potential attacking moves. Fellow under 16 representative Ruby McCloskey and senior squad player Marianna Anthony, who is only 16 years of age herself, playing a large part in developing these patterns of play.

The first goal came through the pressure tactics demonstrated by Bullen, the goal coming largely against the run of play. This however was the only the second time our girls had trailed against a team since new Head Coach Matthew Maslak had taken control of the team, so it provided a good insight into the psychological make up of how our girls would cope with this task.

Our girls continued to be calm and provide large periods of sustained possession, the first half finished with our girls trailing 1-0.

The half time message from Head Coach Matthew Maslak was to consider the oppositions tactics and how to negate these actions, the solution was to raise the ball speed and lift the intensity when in possession. The girls creating goal scoring chances so the next point was to create more solutions and developing continuous stages of pressure.

Again starting the second half 1-0 behind, the girls displaying quality passages of play and mature football. On an outside of the game you would have believed our South Melbourne girls to be in a strong leading position, not even to consider our girls to be trailing the game.

However the game was tied in a characteristic manor, a nice passing move started in central midfield with Marianna Anthony and Rhea Schreuder eventually finishing off with a strike from Sarah Sumner inside the 18 yard area. This was just the beginning of the expected attacking onslaught.

Chance after chance being created, controlled possession and lack of any danger in our defensive zones resulting in only one conclusion.. A winning goal.

The goal again coming through midfield, starting in defence with Elif Yilmaz who was providing a good attacking outlet on the right side as full back. This time the goal coming from outside the 18 yard area from Rhea Schreuder, a powerful strike which was unstoppable in the opposition goal.

The game played at out the 2-1 scoreline, a few nervous moments towards the end as Bullen playing with a much older and mature side created a few pressure situations however our girls showing resilience and determination to take the victory that they most certainly deserved.

Head Coach Matthew Maslak spoke after the game of the lessons his players will have taken from the game, playing the way we're trying to develop will create pressure on ourselves and we have to provide solutions to the tasks and challenges placed on us as a group.

Mentioning about the development over the period of time Coach Maslak has being in charge, saying that the group has many young talented players that are constantly striving to learn and improve, showing great characteristics and personal qualities. The team now starting to understand the fundamentals of our brand of football.

Good performances again Marianna Anthony, Emanuella Fierro, Elif Yilmaz and Rhea Schreuder.

 1. Beth Mason-Jones, 17. Lisa Fonua, 6. Deryal Aziz, 5. Holly Davey, 3. Elif Yilmaz, 9. Maryann Pitt, 15. Elle Giuliano, 16. Alanah Giuliano, 10. Rhea Schreuder, 11. Sarah Sumner, 7. Renee Laszczak, 14. Olivia Soares, 4. Ruby McCloskey, 2. Emanuella Fierro, 8. Marianna Anthony.

SMWFC Vs Boroondara 13th July

South Melbourne Reserves travelled to Boroonadara Eagles in the next round of the reserves league, kick off was later than usual and could may play an effect in the game, also playing on an artificial surface.

After the pervious rounds victory, the girls full of confidence but without largely influential player Marianna Anthony who has being a dominating presence in central midfield in recent weeks. Marianna stepping into the senior starting line up, providing a powerful note to all the reserve players that if you provide consistently high performances then you will receive the chances in our senior line up, and extra encouragement to the younger players in our reserve and junior squads as Marianna still only at the age of 16 years old.

The game starting at a frenetic pace with the second team in two weeks adopting the tactics of high, high pressure and no real technical understanding. Also playing on a totally different artificial surface which was electric in pace, showing that any little miss placed pass or miss judged control would result in loss of possession. Early in the game it was clear to see the tactics demonstrated by the opposition, winning without development.

However, our girls trusting in their abilities and understanding of our tactics, providing options to play football (let's remember why the game is called football!!). Boroonadara again just providing a tactic of only creating pressure on the opposition, when adding all the additions together it was no surprise that after a mistake in our defence that the opening goal was conceded.

The game was never really allowed to get into any rhythm with 4/5 substitutions made every 10 mins, on a positive note our girls did keep to their principles of keeping possession and trying to play the game called football.

At half time Coach Maslak asked the girls to lift the ball speed and intensity in getting the ball forward, as previously mentioned, the oppositions only inclusion into the game was creating high pressure so every time our girls managed to break that initial pressure, we looked dangerous on the attack especially in Rhea Schreuder.

The second half starting in the same trend as the first, constant substations and high pressure. Ours girls however after lifting the intensity and ball speed where demonstrating their skills and showcasing the ability in the team.

It was now clear to see after improving on the pervious points our girls were now providing a dominant display, now with the oppositions tactics failing. It was only a matter of time until the equalising goal, Rhea Schreuder defiantly the star of the match as every time when receiving the ball she was a huge threat to Boroonadara, creating many, many chances.

The goal did finally come, no surprise that the main creator was Rhea Schreuder. Rhea dribbling the ball around two players and providing a fantastic cut pass cross inside the 6 yard area for Olivia Soares to cooly finish. The goal well deserved by the goal scorer also as Olivia playing central midfield was very close to the high level of performance set from senior squad player Rhea Schreuder who just to note still at the age of 16 years old.

The girls now having the feeling of possibly over turning the score, as of the previous game against Bullen, our girls fully on the attack and what seemed to be controlling the game and just waiting on the inevitable winning goal. To everyone's surprise that winning goal was to Boroonadara, cruelly counter attacking and scoring a very late goal, well and truly against the run of play.

Head Coach Matthew Maslak was clearly upset for the girls but was secretly intrigued with how the girls would react to this action, clearly losing a game that was against the true reflection of the match. Coach Maslak said he was happy with the second half display but was concerned over the first half, saying the girls are now clearly developing a reputation of playing football against all odds but now have to be able to solve problems the oppositions tactics of creating high pressure to negate our way of playing.

Head Coach Maslak placed special praise to Rhea Schreuder who he said really took on the job of a senior player role which leads and drives the team both in attack and defence, Rhea showing she has endless ability but now displaying she has a the make up to take the mantle and responsibility of the team herself. Also praise was given to Elif Yilmaz who showed a steely strength in defence and the quick ball transition forward into attack. Two remaining girls receiving credit, Olivia Soares playing central midfield, Coach Maslak saying every time Olivia takes the field he is stunned that she is still at the unbelievable age of 13 years old.. Remarkable, lastly Renee Laszczak who playing right midfield provided pace and great technical ability constantly providing danger and opportunities on the right side of midfield.

1. Beth Mason-Jones, 5. Lisa Fonua, 6. Deryal Aziz, 15. Holly Davey, 12. Elif Yilmaz, 9. Maryann Pitt, 2. Elle Giuliano, 8. Alanah Giuliano, 10. Rhea Schreuder, 11. Sarah Sumner, 16. Renee Laszczak, 14. Olivia Soares, 4. Ruby McCloskey, 3. Emanuella Fierro, 7. Tijant Hussain.

WPL Reserve Saturday 28th June Game Report - Box Hill Vs SMWFC
Following last weekend fantastic performance winning 6-0 against Cairnlea, Head Coach Matthew Maslak was eager to see what the team had in reserve for this weeks game against Box Hill United. Box Hill are renown around the women's scene as being a strong team so this was always going to be a good marker to compare the future of our club.
The squad this week was extra special compared to recent squads, this was due to the fact no fewer than 8 players in the 15 person squad are younger than 16 years old, also Olivia Soares being the still tender age of only 13 years old, add this to her performances then we have a fantastic talent on our hands.
Regular reserve team goal keeper Sharnel Carillo was missing from our squad today, Sharnel being handed her senior debut in the seniors game. Sharnel performing exceptionally well, keeping a clean sheet and being apart of a 1-0 victory for our seniors.
South are really setting a fantastic example for other clubs to follow by promoting young talented players from their ranks, the mentality at this level of development and production over winning at any cost is really refreshing to see at such a large club.
Again the principles applied by Coach Maslak of keeping possession, playing attractive football were regularly on show during the game. The girls are exciting the spectators and producing regular stages of controlled possession, again this is really a sign of positive times for the players and also the future of South Melbourne.
The scoreline of 2-1, in the favour of South, wasn't a true reflection on the performance or dominance our girls showed. A possession percentage that was touching 65/70 per cent, chances being created above double figures shows the more true reflection on the game.
The first goal came from a set piece, pin point delivery from Sarah Sumner was finished off by 13 year old Olivia Soares. The first goal came in 20 mins, a 20 mins were Box Hill barely saw the ball.
South continued to control the game and provide demonstrations of the principles expected by Coach Maslak, regularly re-cycling controlled possession back to the goal keeper and switching to the opposite side of the field.
Our second goal came midway through the second half, again a typical flowing move starting from defence involving Elif Yimaz at right full back and switching through 4 players before Renee Laszczak receives possession, nice link up play with Maryanne Pitt resulted in Renee being through on goal with only the goal keeper to beat. The under 16 player providing coolness and great ability to finish a great pass and move sequence, by placing the ball in the bottom corner.
With our girls playing the game out at 2-0, we were cruelly hit on a quick counter attack in which a goal was dragged back for Box Hill, clearly against the momentum of the game, however post game Coach Maslak spoke of how football at this age has a fantastic way of providing excellent lessons on the fact you don't always get what you deserve through a game, hopefully the girls learning from this point.
Final comments from Head Coach Matthew Maslak were again extremely positive, mentioning how important it was for the younger girls to gain experience at this level, adding he was particularly impressed with the performances from juniors Renee Laszczak, Olivia Soares and Emmanuelle Fiello.
These girls being backed up with strong performances throughout the squad, the girls really providing the club a positive out look on its future.

1. Emily Kenshole, 2. Elif Yilmaz, 5. Lisa Fonua, 6. Deryel Aziz, 7. Sarah Sumner, 8. Holly Davey,  4. Ruby McCloskey, 11. Olivia Soares, 10. Renee Laszczak, 9. Maryanne Pitt, 12. Emmanuelle Fiello, 13. Samantha Sheldon, 14. Alana Seldon, 15. Maddy Jones.

WPL Reserve Sunday 22nd June Game Report - Mathew M ( New Reserves Coach)
Today's reserve team game against Cairnlea was a very productive day, as described by Head Coach Matthew Maslak. The team not only winning the game but providing a fantastic footballing display, and many players showing that the club has a very bright future.
The game finishing 6-0, was as the score line suggests a very, very one sided game which was dominated by our girls from the first second to the last second.
After 20 mins of sustained possession and numerous chances being created by South the deadlock was finally broken, after a powerful dribbling run along the left wing by Sarah Sumnar, she whipped a cross behind defenders and in front of the goal keeper to find the opposite winger Elif Yilmaz to slot the ball under the goal keep nicely. This then led to the girls dropping any nervous energy which might have built up after creating countless chances, but being unable to finish them off.
The second goal was one right out of Barca's tikka taka school of football, the ball starting on half way line with full back Deryel Aziz, having been told from Head Coach Maslak not to force possession forward when unable to find feet, the young defender decided to recycle the ball back to central defender Lauren Farrugia.
From the defender the ball found itself as central midfielder Marianna Anthony's feet having worked its way through 3 other players, Marianna then played forward to Rhea Schreuder playing as number 10. Rhea receiving on the half turn and playing a sublime 1-2 with striker Maryann Pitt and then also playing another 1-2 with left winger Sarah Sumnar before cooly placing the ball under the on coming goal keeper.
Now being 2-0 ahead our girls really began to control the game, playing sustained periods in the Cairnlea half.
The third goal was finished off again by Rhea to grab her second, a powerful and accurate corner by Sarah Sumnar found its way to Rhea for a calm finish inside the 6 yard area.
During the introduction under 16 graduate Renee Laszczak was introduced, Renee having performed excellently in the previous games was again in fine form making an instant impact by receiving and keeping possession excellently, also looking very dangerous from her attacking midfield position.
It was no surprise that Renee was involved in the forth goal, receiving from defence and linking with Sarah Sumnar to receive the ball through on goal and placing the ball with excellent maturity and pose.
As pressure and the total dominance by South was all clear to see it was only a matter of time before the next goal, this time Rhea showing fantastic close ball control as her dynamic dribbling ability was far too good for the Cairnlea defence down the left wing, Rhea then splitting two defenders to find a forceful run through the middle by an equally impressive Elif Yilmaz. Elif cooly controlling the ball and placing her shot into the bottom corner.
As with the second goal, the tikka taka on display was sublime for coach Maslak to witness, mentioning after the game.. The move was started by holding midfielder Marianna Anthony, Marianna switching play from right to left before Rhea receives the ball, from here the ball was played with great precision and speed into youngster Renee Laszczak who expertly received the ball whilst out manipulating the ball around the on coming defender, only to find herself through on goal. No questions as to the outcome!!
After the game Head Coach Matthew Maslak said he was proud of the display from the team, saying the team is really starting to build and learn the principles of our game. There's much to improve on but the signs are extremely positive looking forward to the future of South.
Special praise went out to Marianna Anthony, Renee Laszczak and Alana Guiliano, all showing fantastic displays.

1. Shanel Camilleri, 2. Deryel Aziz, 5. Lisa Fornua, 6. Lauren Farrugia, 3. Ellie Guilliano, 7. Sarah Sumnar, 4. Marianna Anthony, 8. Alana Guilliano, 11. Elif Yilmaz, 10. Rhea Schreuder, 9. Maryanna Pitt, 12. Renee Laszczak, 13. Holly Davey.

WPL Reserves Match Report v' Casey Comets
Full time in the south Melbourne reserves was 2-2, the girls must take many positives away from the game, as should the club as many of the players are between 15/17 years old.
The girls under new management as Matthew Maslak took his first official game as Head Coach looked slightly nervous, playing against a mature and very physical team in Casey Comets, who by the way were above our girls in the table.
As the game began to press on the girls become more comfortable and starting to keep possession my frequently, sometimes creating passing phases of up to and past 5 passes.
On many occasions the girls were making many patterns of play from the goal keeper, particularly impressive through this was Lisa Fonua, Emily Heijden, Deryal Aziz, Alanah Giuliano, Holly Davey, Elif Yilmaz, Elle Giuliano and Shanel Camilleri.
On 30 mins the deadlock was deservedly broken by our girls, fantastic interplay though under 16 youngster Renee Laszczak and Pipa which finally lead to a great finish, cooly slotting the ball under the goal keeper.
With the introduction of another under 16 youngster Ruby McCloskey, playing central midfield this brought even more dominance in the game. Ruby performing beyond her age and showing great maturity when in possession.
Playing on the counter attack Casey cruelly levelled the game with a long distant strike in the bottom corner, now having this boost of confidence the visitors began to force pressure and scoring a fortunate second goal soon after the first.
However, the girls continued to keep good possession and particularly with Elle Giuliano and Cristina Cardaci linking well on the left of attack, our girls constantly looking dangerous.
