Under 6 & 7 Information

Phase 2 – U6 & U7 Player and Coach Development Program:

Age Group:

5, 6 and 7 year old boys and girls.

Program Purpose:

Develop a consistent level of both footballing and athletic ability, through a weekly basic development level circuit program, to provide future players to with fundamental skills and co-ordination required to participate in small sided football.

    • To provide new coaches with the basic understanding of the instruction of junior level training methods.
    • To provide young players and new coaches a controlled and enjoyable introduction to playing football in a team environment at a familiar location amongst friend to learn the basic football, teamwork and fair play.

Reason for the Program:

The U6 & U7 Player and Coach Development Program was established in 2011 as a result of Taringa Rovers identification of the significant variation in player abilities in small sided football as a result the quality of initial coaching being received by parent coaches. In essence Taringa Rovers identified that players who were lucky enough to be coached by a parent/coach who had either junior coaching qualifications or at least a background in football generally exhibited a more well-rounded array of footballing skills and abilities. In an effort to try and provide all new players with ‘good fundamentals’ in football it was determined that a program needed to be developed to train not only players, but also coaches in the fundamental skills of football.

The program seeks to allow children the opportunity to further develop the fundamental athletic, co-ordination and footballing skills in a fun non-competitive environment in order and then to implement these skills in game based situation directly after the end of the skills coaching session.

The original program design was developed by former Taringa Rovers Premier League Coach, Joe Fenech and is now administered by Taringa Rovers Junior Technical Director, Kelvin Wheeler an AFC 'B' licence qualified coach.

Program Structure:

The full U6 & U7 Player and Coach Development Program is a 20 week program run throughout the regular football season from Mid-April until the End of August excluding school holidays.

The U6 & U7 Player and Coach Development Program is run as a 1.5 hour program on a Saturday Morning.

The first 45 minutes comprises a series of circuit stations (usually 6 – 8 circuits) with teams of between 6 to 10 children. Each group of children has a coach (usually a parent) and the whole skills circuit is led by one of Taringa Rovers qualified coaches.

The second 45 minutes comprises in-house small sided games of 20 minute halves, with each coach organising their respective teams and the game being led by an additional parent.

The range of drills/activities at each circuit is varied weekly to maintain variety and to build skill level. All drills/activities involve ball work and the drills and activities focus on passing technique, ball control, shooting technique, passing accuracy, dribbling, shooting etc.

Program Future in 2014 and Beyond:

The U6 & U7 Player and Coach Development Program have proved a very successful program in terms of both participation numbers and football development for local young children.

Further we believe that the U6 & U7 Player and Coach Development Program will form the basic platform for both player and coach development at Taringa Rovers for the foreseeable future.
