Penrith Rams Under 18’s head to Riverview on Saturday to play their final match of the 2011 season. It has been somewhat of a “rollercoaster” ride for the team but although missing finals action over the next few weeks, have acquitted themselves very well this season with four wins and a few near misses. With Firsts and Reserves having the weekend off after taking out the club’s first “dual minor premierships” all eyes will be on the 18’s in their final match. Team selections to follow.
Match Preview
The 18's end off their season on Saturday when they head to Riverview to front up against the fifth placed school.
It has been a tough inititiation for the team this season in the Sydney elite Premier Cup competition and the squad has done an outstanding job despite their ladder position.
Last week they fell to East Coast by a big margin but the old cliche that the scoreboard did not reflect the run of play has never been more evident. The hot premiership favourites were able to convert their chances whilst the Rams often fell at the last hurdle in the match at Greygums. The previous week, Penrith ran in a fine performance to defeat St George by 10 goals which illustrated the talent in the side.
Both teams last met in round 6 in May when Penrith caused one of the major upsets of the year when they beat the previously undefeated Riverview by 15 points at Greygums Oval. The side got the early jump that day with a 4.4 opening term and restrained their opponents to just a lone goal. The team have proved that a good opening stanza has made them hard to beat this year and they will be looking to play steady football at the start of the game.
Riverview's form has been solid of late with wins over St George, Illawarra and Sydney Uni sandwiched in between narrow losses to North Shore and East Coast. A win or loss is of little concern to them as they will be playing in the elimination final next week.
Penrith will be searching for their fifth win of the year, a commendable achievemnt in their first season at this level. Big games are expected by the dozen players who will be playing their final 18's game for the year before stepping up to the senior grades. Coach Rob Murie, assistants Dave Nolan and Mick Walker along with trainer Theo Paneras and manager Rob Swarbrick will be proud of their charges effort this year and looking forward to the 2012 season. The games starts at 10:00 AM
