The PJ Burns Noosa Tigers returned to their home ground at Weyba Rd for the round 14 clash against Aspley. A massive crowd had turned up to listen to Kevin Sheedy speak at the Presidents lunch and the perfect weather set the scene for a great day.
Noosa made three changes from last week. Cubby Isles and Shane Davis both came back in after having a week off from injury and Seb Rogers came back after spending a couple of weeks with the Brisbane Lion Cubs. Jesse Malthouse and Morgan Webb went out to nurse injuries and Alex Corigan went back to the reserves.
The day started perfectly for the Tigers as Dan Pertot tapped the ball to Isles, Isles spotted up Peter Trompf who started at Centre Half forward. Trompf mark and goaled and got things going for the Tigers. Noosa slammed on 7 goals to 1 in the first quarter and moved the ball with precision. James Gellie looked like he was set for a big day as he kicked 2 goals in the first and Josh Reichman picked up where he left off from last week with some strong marking in the forward 50. At quarter time Noosa had already bolted out to a 39 point lead. Noosa 7-5-47 to Aspley 1-2-8.
After a sluggish start to the second term, Noosa took full control of the game, again kicking 7 goals for the quarter but this time keeping Aspley scoreless. Ryley Buntain and Jack Hendrie were playing keepings off down back and Tom McKittrick was having his best game for the year in the midfield. At half time Noosa were 87 points clear, Noosa 14-11-95 to Aspley 1-2-8.
Aspely came out after half time on a mission and kicked the first goal but it wasn't long until Noosa got back in control. Sam Dwyer was clever around the stoppages and Jed Mullen was outstanding with his run out of defence. Dylan Dempsey was returning to some good form with hard running through the midfield and Brett Duke was giving the Tigers a good target to kick to up forward. An inaccurate Noosa kicked 4 goals to 1 to take the lead out to 110 points at three quarter time. Noosa 18-17-125 Aspley 2-3-15.
You could forgive the players if they took the foot of the gas and cruised in the final quarter but that was the last thing on the players minds. The added another 8 goals in the final term to Aspley's 1 to finish the day with a huge 131 point winners. Gellie slotted home his 9th goal late in the term and Duke kicked his 5th just as the siren sounded. Dylan Murray never stopped running and was excellent all day, Seb Rogers was fantastic all day as well. Final score was Noosa 26-19-175 to Aspley 3-6-24. This win has Noosa sitting second and a game clear of Kedron who are 3rd and with 4 rounds to go, Noosa are looking good to finish the year in 2nd and get the all important second chance during the finals.
Best players, Jack Hendrie, Ryley Buntain, Tom McKittrick, James Gellie, Dylan Dempsey and Dylan Murray.
Goal Kickers James Gellie 9, Brett Duke 5, Dylan Murray 2, Tom McKittrick 2, Seb Rogers 2, Josh Reichman 2, Nathan Winter 1, Peter Trompf 1, Jai Fitzpatrick 1, Shane Davis 1.
The reserves had a comfortable 79 point win in the early game. Final score was Noosa 15-13-103 to Aspely 3-6-24. Jack Tickner continued his great form and his push for senior selection and Big Steve Simpson was brilliant all day. Max Paterson finished the day with 6 goals and Zac McDonald kicked 5. This win keeps the reserves in 4th but even with Caloundra on points who are 3rd and a real threat to slip into that 3rd place if they can continue this good form by the end of the year.
Next week, the Fiona Winter Realty Noosa Tigers take on Sunshine Coast rival Nambour at home. This is the 3rd time these two have met this year and Noosa has won both games in both grades and will be looking to sweep the series with another win.
See you at Weyba Rd next week.
