Our last report in October stated that the Club was due to commence the first stage of renovations, in readiness for the upcoming visit by GWS Giants in two weeks time.
Aeration, top dressing and fertilising was undertaken along with resurfacing of the centre square and two goal squares. A second aeration and fertilising was completed last week.
A GWS representative inspected the ground last Friday and was complimentary of the Club’s efforts and would expect the Giants to enjoy the grounds condition.
As everyone is aware rain has been at a premium with a few scattered showers at best. To subsidise for the lack of rain, the travelling irrigator borrowed from Sunshine Coast Council has helped overcome part of the problem. However as this runs off town water its use has been minimal due to the high cost of town water.
A decision was made by the Management Committee to upgrade the Club’s bore with two new spears, which has proved a godsend. We are now able to run a second smaller travelling irrigator (owned by the Club) to water more frequently. The movement of these two irrigators has largely been handled by Jim Rusan. Those who may not know Jim, he is selling the mangoes out the front of the Club, as well as doing some mowing, whipper snipping, poisoning and watering in his spare time!!
However we can be thankful for the volunteer efforts of Jim Rusan and Mike Storrer. Mike took on a personal responsibility for the hand watering of all three new turf areas. This is the second year Mike has offered to do this important job; which is not taken for granted and much appreciated.
Damien Walsh pulled together the contractors and pricing for the renovations for which we are starting to see the benefits. But nothing can be achieved without the co-operation and communication of the Management Committee and sub-committees. Scott McKenzie has co-ordinated this side of the project and the results are coming.
Not much more needs to be done on the renovations; however mowing and control of growth will become a priority into the New Year.
Financially the Club did have some good fortune last year, when, as part of the Sunshine Coast Council’s commitment to the GWS visit they financed the renovation costs. This enabled our Club to gain an important year’s relief with budgeting, thus allowing a solid financial start to this years renovations.
The club has organised a working bee on Saturday 13th December to carry out some last minute tidy up work prior to the arrival of GWS Giants on December 15th.
If anyone would like to ask any questions regarding the works, or intended works, please do not hesitate to come forward and talk to Scott, Damien or Bart regarding progress or future plans.
