The final week before a month off (2 weekends holiday then a bye) saw us travel down to Jimboomba bright and early again Sunday morning in what was for us a very important game. We didn’t play up to expectations last week and so it was really important to see what lessons were learned, if any. A beautiful day greeted us but unfortunately the ground was in pretty poor condition. All the early weeks rain and a seniors game the day before had really left in poor shape. Some areas of the ground were ok but there were some very soft and muddy patches through the middle of the ground. Added to this a very heavy dew from the night before and it became obvious on inspection that it was going to be an ugly contest. The ball would become slippery and heavy very quickly.
The boys all, bar one, arrived at the ground on time and seemed pretty focussed on what we needed to do. A quick team chat out in the middle followed by a much better warm up than last week and we were ready to go. The pre match address basically just reiterated the need to play 80 minutes and play good, hard wet weather footy. There was no breeze to speak of so no advantage at the toss either way. The Redbacks made the first forward 50 entry of the game but that was to be pretty much it as we dominated possession from that point on for the rest of the quarter, and the next. At half time we had 21 scoring shots to 2 to lead by nearly 10 goals and it was game over. Our bigger bodies were a bit too much for a gallant Jimboomba side, especially in the heavy conditions.
To Jimboomba’s credit they came out and played good wet weather footy in an even 3rd quarter, where the game had really become just a slog, but we really put the foot down in the last and won comfortably in the end by 71 points. Full credit to both sides in tough conditions to keep battling away at the finish with a footy that by that stage weighed as much as a small car.
Yes it wasn’t pretty at all but I was really pleased with the final result and how we went about it. We really did apply ourselves for the full 80 minutes and to have 30 scoring shots (plus a few more that missed everything) in those conditions was good reward for the efforts of players up the ground. This week we had a much larger spread of contributors too and our key stats targets that we keep were all met. It’s tough not to give away free kicks in heavy going as there are so many contests but I was much happier with this part of our game too, we still lost the free kick count but it was much better.
Final scores: Springwood 13-17-95 def Jimboomba 3-6-24
Best players, way too difficult this week, could name just about everyone so not going to try, a good, solid TEAM effort.
Goalkickers: Jack Leahy 3, Lachy 3, Jayden Ruscoe 1, Corbz 1, Jake 1, Jared 1, Jack Rogers 1, Liam Eddy 1, Sean 1. That’s a nice spread of goal kickers too, that’s always pleasing.
So that’s it for a little while now in terms of games, I will see you all tonight and Wednesday for training. Tonight we will go through plans for training etc over the holidays and what we have coming up after the break. We are in a good spot now on top of the ladder at a little over the half way mark but I hope you all understand that there is so much work to do yet. Redcliffe and Alex Hills both loom and they appear to be improving every week as does Beenleigh. Coorparoo are getting some good results lately too and we would probably play them again this year. Morningside beat us earlier in the year and they are our first game back so it will be a tough 6 weeks or so after the break and that’s probably a good thing. If we are going to play finals and give a good account of ourselves in them we want to have tough games leading in.
See you all tonight
Cheers,
Steve
