An undermanned Scorpion team tried hard all day but could not overcome a more experienced Coburg at Shepley oval on Sunday.
The undersized Scorpions led by three goals early in the game but were pegged back by quarter time and never regained the lead again. The loss of Jason Caples in this quarter put even more pressure on the Scorp backline. Coburg converted better in the second term and led by 15 points at the main break.
In the third term skill errors were again the bain of the Scorps and a lot of good work up the ground was wasted as the ball was turned over and Coburg took advantage of the Scorp mistakes and at the last break led by 4 goals.
The Scorpions battled the game out in the final term but only outscored the Burgers by 1 point, finally going down by 23 points. Allan Murray played very well up forward and his strong leading and marking resulted in 5 very good goals. Xavier Clark worked hard all day through the middle, and solid efforts were provided Steve Harrison in an unfamiliar role at CHF, and Barry Brooks in the ruck and up forward.
The club has a relatively young and inexperienced list that struggles to cover the loss of St Kilda list players who are injured or suspended.
We are looking for a better effort when the Scorps take on Box Hill at Box Hill city oval on Sunday at 2.00pm. See you there.
The club is holding a 'Monte Carlo Black Cat Night' at the Newcomen Road clubrooms on Friday 13 August from 7.30pm. The cost is $20 and will include an auction, nibbles, desserts, entertainment, and games. Dress in black is required and you should contact the club on 9547 2743 to book.
