The Mortlock 2012 football season kicked off on the 22nd of April at home against Toodyay. With a packed house the Reserves side kick-started the day with a 154 point win giving the League side something to strive for. Unfotunately it just wasn't their day and were out-skilled and out-classed by a new and improved Toodyay side. One final burst of enthusiasm saw the Gingin spectators on the edges of their seats come half way through the final term. However a quick turnover and snap at goal saw Toodyay seal the deal with a 10 point victory over the home side. Through the loss, though, came some positives in new-guy Dylan Eiffler who showed reliability all day and Jack Woodruff down-back who never showed signs of giving up. American Jason Wilhelm played his first game for the club and also showed signs of handiness and continued to improve throughout the game especially when he contained his free kicks 'against' and won some 'for' instead.
A week later and the boys hit the road for Dalwallinu and both sides came away with a win, League getting up by 41 points and the Reserves side keeping Dally goaless in a 70 point win. Both games, again, saw flashes of brilliance. Some new young faces for the League team in Brayden Worth and Tom 'Splinter' Woodruff gave a fresh and enthusiastic element to the side.
Back at home the following week saw our League boys host the team that pipped them in the grand final two years ago. The Reserves team nailed a 103 point win over Dowerin and continued in their professional and skillful form. The League side could not compete with the pace of Dowerin and lost by 9 points. Stand-out for the day went to young-guns Kirk Bartel and Ben King for ongoing effort and committment all day. Coach Christian Kelly also did his best to show his team what quick-thinking and smart decisions can acheive. American Jason Wilhelm showed courage and unfotunately took a big hit resulting in mild concussion and a headache for the rest of the day.
And so the League boys hit the track the following training with a 1-2 win-loss to their names. With a bye the following weekend the boys had some much needed time to freshen up ready to tackle top 3 side the Wongan Ballidu Boomers. FINALLY the Gingin boys showed what they can are capable of and resembled last years premiereship side in their 30 point win over Wongan. Teamwork, skill and better decision making answered everything Wongan threw at them with Jack Woodruff and Rheece Bartel the stand-outs for the day, although it was a team effort by all that got the win. Big Geoff Rouse booted a regular 6 helped out in the forward line by Brendon Fewster who kicked 4. The Reserves also had another win defeating Wongan by 85 points, Coach Paul Fewster no doubt happy with how his team are travelling.
This Sunday the 27th of May Gingin travels to Calingiri to hopefully bag another win.
