Bloods Disappoint
Aquinas travelled to Dandenong to take on one of the form teams of the competition, St John’s. Again determined to put in a good show, Aquinas had seven changes at the selection table and knew that their best chance was to close the game down. With veteran Toomey taking the reins as skipper, Aquinas won the toss and Tooms was persuaded to kick with the wind. Playing 1-on-1 football, Aquinas started well and kept the pressure on for the whole quarter, and came into the first change confident with its style and holding a 1 goal lead
The second quarter started the same as the 1st finished off, with a real arm-wrestle for the lead. With Trent Harkin & Paul Flynn playing their roles for the team and Lachy Mac putting on a big tackle, the confidence levels grew. However, the Bloods seemed to get ahead of themselves and took the foot of the pedal which is exactly what you can not do against good sides. St John’s, being a good side, made the Bloods pay with some impressive football and broke the game open to take a handy 5 goal lead into the main change.
The 3rd quarter is when St Johns showed their ascendancy. With the wind coming to a near stop, St John’s showed why they are a good team. Aquinas struggled to get going after the break. Al Guthrie was presenting well up across half forward and the Jess brothers Mick & John, working hard in the middle, tried their best but needed more assistance. The final quarter was the same as the third, and it was a really disappointing day for the Bloods who must show more fight and tough things out. With too much left to too few, the next few weeks will be interesting to see the attitude of the players. We now focus on rival South Melbourne at home.
