Bloods Out Classed
Aquinas ventured to Carnegie to take on the undefeated Glen Eira on Saturday on what was built as a big day in the history of the Club, with the ever-reliable, courageous and loyal Trent Harkin becoming the 16th player in Aquinas' 30 year history to play 200 games for the Bloods. The Bloods were inspired by speeches from life member Bernie Moran and a cameo by Justin Langer in the rooms prior to the game. However, that was pretty much all of the highlights of the day with Aquinas completely out-classed all day by a very well-drilled Glen Eira side.
Harks, who was captain for the day, lost the toss and the Bloods were forced to kick against the wind. Aquinas battled gamely in the first quarter holding Glen Eira to 4.5 but were unable to put any scoreboard pressure on themselves and went into quarter time 29 points down. The second quarter saw Lachy Barnes thrown into the ruck with a positive response. Harks and Mick Jess started to get their hand on the ball and the backline of Rainey and McPherson were trying hard to repel the Glen Eira attack. The Bloods went in the main break 7 goals down and disappointed in their efforts.
The second half was the same as the first, with not enough pressure put on the opposition and with too much left to too few. Young players Lachy Mac and Russ Foster were thrown in to different roles and were able to walk of the ground with their heads held high. Other positives for the day were the form of other future stars (hopefully 200 gamers) Mitch Rainey and Adam Braun. In what was a disappointing day for the club, I am sure all players walked away extremely disappointed they couldn't get a better result for Trent, who was Aquinas' best player for the day.
The Bloods must now bounce back quickly in what looms as a mini Grand Final this week against St Mary’s. With a number of experienced players back this week, many spots will be up for grabs. I now urge all supporters to get right behind the club this week and for the remaining games. I also ask all players for a huge commitment to make sure the club avoids relegation. It is in our hands over the next few weeks and the players' character will be on show. It is not about words, it is all about actions.
