Seniors
First Quarter:
In the first 30 seconds of last week’s game against Woorinen, Coach Simon Bunyan stamped his mark on the game by delivering a sensation tackle on a Woorinen player, a tackle that set the scene for the remainder of the game. Within a couple of minutes of the Round Two clash against Koondrook-Barham commencing, it became clearly evident that Bunyan’s leadership and coaching was impacting in a positive way on the younger Tyntynder players.
How you may ask?
Well the Dogs opening goal this week was the result of a free paid to Kyle Brasser after he applied a ‘Bunyan’ tackle on a K-B defender and then kicked accurately from 45 metres to set the scene for another great opening quarter.
Shortly after Clint Kelly’s kick found Lachie Gilbert who passed to Brad Carroll, who after having the ball knocked free quickly recovered to deliver a slick handball back to a running Gilbert who snapped a brilliant left foot goal.
Kane Bannan, who was moving well on the forward line, took a strong chest mark close to the 50 meter mark, but his resultant shot on goal hit the post. Smart play by Ryan Devereux saw him intercept the kick in and bring up full points.
Gilbert, in everything early, switched play to find Denham near the centre who found a leading Kelly some 40 metres out directly in front and his kick never looked like missing.
Mark O’Bryan was really working hard down back when the Raiders did attempt to go forward, and after taking a strong mark he switched play to find a now on ball Carroll, who found Reece Collins, onto Dean Pound whose lace out pass resulted in Kelly marking and goaling from 45 metres out.
Another great team goal followed after Tim Styles, Pound, Carroll, Kelly and Bunyan all combined with Devereux being on the end to kick another.
Carroll started the next forward movement by winning the centre clearance, his kick up forward spilling free to Brasser who found a leading Bannam who marked and kicked the Dogs seventh.
The Raiders managed to go into attack on a number of occasions but strong pressure from a hard working backline led by Paul Munro, Brenton Rowe, Styles, Collins, Zane Hunt, O’Bryan and Kyle Symons allowed them to mange just three behinds.
Bannam kicked another major after being on the end of a fine Mark Corrie pass. Leigh Masters, back from the Bendigo Pioneers, was in everything from the moment he entered the ground, and after he and O’Toole worked hard on the wing to retain the ball, Trent Storer found Devereux who kicked his second.
Quarter Time Score: Tyntynder 9-3-57 to K-B 0-3-3
Second Quarter:
Corrie kicked the opener early in the second after Bannam’s pass found him 20 metres out. When Denham found Kelly who handballed to a running Masters who goaled from 30, it was all one way traffic.
The backline continued to repel all forward thrusts by the Raiders and one could not help but be impressed by their composure, especially youngster Symons who appears to be a younger version of Luke O’Toole, with hair.
Carroll snapped another from the square thanks to some hard work from Bannam and Kelly. After consecutive points, Bunyan was able to mark a kick in, and goal from 35 metres.
Styles, Munro, Symons, Brett Conway and Shannon Dixon were still holding strong down back, and when Bannam’s handball found Pound who kicked a great 40 metre running goal, one was thinking that the Raider may not even get to score a major.
But shortly after they did goal, well the goal umpire waved both flags but a diving Conway did claim he got a hand to the ball before it crossed the goal line.
A great tackle down back by Masters, saw the ball spill to Gilbert, onto Pound who picked out Kelly to kick a lovely running 45 metre goal to give the Dogs their 16th right on half time.
Half Time Score: Tyntynder 16-8-104 to K-B 1-4-10
Third Quarter:
At half time, a pleased Bunyan told the group to stick to the game plan and if they did this, the scoreboard would continue to look after itself.
When Bunyan switched play early in the third term to find Brasser, whose pass found O’Toole, who found Carroll who marked 40 metres out and goaled, one got the impression that a repeat of the first half was about to be repeated.
Carroll instigated the next goal, thanks to a desperate dive and tap on to Masters who kicked a wonderful running goal from boundary and almost on the 50 metre line.
The Raiders began to lift but a great tackle by Corrie, saw Kelly handball to Bunyan to Brasser, who tapped to Bannam for another for the Dogs.
O’Bryan appeared to be clearly held out of the contest shortly after but was not rewarded as Raiders finally managed to score their second major shortly after.
Three consecutive behinds to the Dogs followed before ruckman Pound crumbed like a rover to gather a free ball and boot a magnificent 58 metre goal on the run.
Carroll, spending plenty of time on the ball, and winning heaps of it, passed to Pound who kicked in the Bannam direction, who was given a free for in the back, and goaled from the resultant kick.
Tim Styles, after spending a short period of time on the bench, returned to mark strongly up forward, his long kick into the square spilled off hand where Brasser goaled off the ground.
Denham, doing plenty of running around the wing, kicked long to half forward where Rowe, having followed his opponent, marked to then kick his first and the Dogs 23rd just before three quarter time.
Three Quarter Time Score: Tyntynder 23-14-153 to K-B 2-4-16
Final Quarter:
The opening five minutes of the last quarter was very even as the young Raiders gave their all in an attempt to at least earn some respect, as the ball moved back and forth between the back lines.
Symons, Munro, O’Bryan, Conway and Rowe continued to work hard down back, and the same could be said for Masters, Denham, Bunyan, Gilbert and Brasser around the centre of the ground.
The deadlock was broken when a Bunyan pass to Collins result in him goaling from 40.
Denham, Pound and Kelly then all missed very gettable goals before O’Toole kicked truly from 35 metres after excellent team play by Carroll and Styles.
Gilbert then found Carroll in the square for another, repeated shortly after when Denham found Brasser in the square for the same result.
Carroll capped off a great team performance when his left foot snap gave the Dogs their 28th goal dep in the last quarter.
Coach Bunyan was a very happy man at the end of the game, and why would he be, having just led his boys to a fine 168 point victory.
Final Score: Tyntynder 28-17-185 defeated K-B 2-5-17
