Seniors
First Quarter:
As a result of heavy overnight rain, plus further heavy rain received during the playing of the Colts game, Tyntynder took on home team Kerang on a ground rated heavy in racing terms.
The Dogs kicked with the aid of what appeared to be a 3 goal wind in the opening term, however it was Kerang who won the first clearance and with smart handball took the ball forward immediately to score a major within 30 seconds of the bounce.
Again Kerang won the clearance and drove forward where Tim Styles won possession, but a poor kick across goal resulted in another goal to the home team.
The Dogs began to lift their work rate, with Dean Pound and Simon Bunyan in particular winning some hard balls in the muddy conditions. Kerang went forward again and should have made it three straight but thankfully the kick was just off line.
At last the Dogs made a positive forward move with Lachie Gilbert handballing to the running Ryan Devereux who then handballed to Reece Collins whose pinpoint pass was marked by Brad Carroll. Unfortunately his shot from 35 metres out straight in front and brought up a behind.
Long kicking had been missing from the Dogs game early and it was pleasing at the 17 minute mark to see Pound find Devereux with a 60 metre kick from Centre Half Back, who in turn found Bannam who goaled on the run, to give the Dogs their first.
Shortly after Bannam took a heavy knock on the shoulder going for a contested ball, resulting in a dislocated shoulder and ending his day.
Kerang were relentless with their attack on the ball, and when three Dogs defenders flew together for the ball at Centre Half Back, the only man down was a Kerang player who passed off to Kelm, who marked and goaled.
The Blues again won the centre clearance, resulting in a loose man marking 45 metres out and again bringing up full points.
Finally the Dogs won a centre clearance as Bunyan drove the ball forward resulting in Pound marking but being off line with his kick.
Clint Kelly took an excellent mark from the kick in, and then received a 50 metre penalty to take him the goal line. As the siren sounded for quarter time, he registered the Dogs second goal in what was a disappointing quarter of football. And coach Bunyan expressed his displeasure during the break at some of the decision making and the failure to stick to the game plan, and asked for players to ignore the scoreboard and lift in the second term.
Quarter Time Score: Tyntynder 2-3-15 to Kerang 4-3-27
Second Quarter:
The second quarter started in scrappy fashion but the Dogs had lifted their work rate, with Mark Corrie, Luke O’Toole, Mark O’Bryan, Paul Munro, Kyle Symons, Styles and Collins all being prominent in the attempt to keep Kerang from fully utilising the wind.
It was 9 minutes before Kerang broke through for a goal after excellent team play saw them carry the ball from the last line of defence. From the centre bounce, the ball spilled towards the Dogs forward line but Kerang defence immediately drove the ball deep back into their forward line where an excellent snap from deep on the boundary, gave the Blues two goals within the minute.
Again the Blues attacked from the bounce, and a strong mark in the square gave them three goals in as many minutes to really break the game open.
The Dogs needed to lift, and when Pound marked 30 metres out as the result of some good team play involving Collins, Kelly and Bunyan, a goal looked on the cards. But in a reflection of how the Dogs day was going, his kick was a shocker resulting in no score.
The ball was in the Dogs forward line for what seemed like ages before Devereux and Bunyan combined to drive the ball forward where Kyle Brasser roved the pack and his snap finally brought up a much needed goal.
The Blues went forward and luckily for the Dogs they were off line as they registered two behinds in as many minutes. Shannon Dixon, off the bench, worked hard under the pack to get the ball out to Bunyan who found Kelly loose around half forward, and his running shot on goal brought up full points to keep the Dogs within touch.
Kelly was again involved shortly after when his great tackle was rewarded, allowing Bunyan to be the benefit of the advantage rule to kick a wonderful running goal from 45 metres out.
However Kerang were not going to lie down, replying almost immediately. The Dogs began to fiddle a little with the ball in their forward line, as Corrie, Devereux, Gilbert, Brasser, Pound, Corrie, Kelly and Zac Denham all handle the ball inside 50 but were unable to score.
Despite being outplayed in the half, the Dogs trailed by just 20 points at the main break, so the game was not lost.
Half Time Score: Tyntynder 5-3-33 to Kerang 8-5-53
Third Quarter:
The beginning of the third quarter saw the ball seesawing between the half back lines as both teams lifted the tempo of the game even further, with Kerang answering every challenge the Dogs threw at them.
Desperate play by Brasser resulted in the ball being forced over the boundary, and from the throw in Kelly snapped a point. Shortly after Kelly had another chance, having marked a pass from O’Toole, but again he was off line.
Kerang attacked strongly but fine play by Devearux, now doing a tagging job down back, Styles, Symons, Munro and O’Toole were holding them at bay.
Defenders of both games were outstanding in this term as neither side gave an inch.
Sean Sennar had a chance late in the quarter, where after working hard at the bottom pack, his snap missed narrowly from the square.
The siren sounded to end an amazing quarter of tough hard football where both teams had given their all but neither has scored a goal, with only a total of 5 behinds being registered for the term.
Three Quarter Time Score: Tyntynder 5-6-36 to Kerang 8-7-55
Final Quarter:
The Dogs started the last term in a positive manner, with Pound to Kelly to Brasser to Gilbert resulting in the ball being deep in the forward line but being rushed for a behind by a desperate Kerang defence.
Bunyan then missed everything after marking an O’Toole pass before Kerang also missed a couple of chances at the other end.
After some 60 minutes of goalless football, the Blues snared one after a long snap from the boundary line bounced through to shut out any chance the Dogs may have had for victory.
The players were still giving their all, as Pound to Brasser to Bunyan resulted in Collins finally scoring a major for the Dogs.
Luke O’Toole was lucky to escape serious injury shortly after when his momentum saw him catapulted over the fence and onto the gravel track around the ground.
O’Bryan, Munro and Symons were still working hard against some quality big men on the Blues forward line.
Pound went down with cramp, having given his all for four quarters, as a strong mark in the square brought up another goal for Kerang.
Trent Storer, whose commitment for the ball won him a free, was able to find Kelly who in turn found Collins to enable him to kick truly from 35 metres on the run.
Munro was still giving everything, having copped plenty himself all day, however in his exuberance he arrived late with a bump, giving the Blues an easy goal from the down field free paid. A number of Kerang players were not happy with the late bump and attempted to take things into their own hands as they retaliated on Buddha, resulting in both Buddha and a Kerang player being shown the yellow card and sent from the field with only minutes remaining on the clock.
Kerang attacked again and a lovely snap right on the final bell added further pain to the day, resulting in the Dogs being defeated by 6 goals by a better team on the day.
Final Score: Tyntynder 7-6-48 defeated Kerang 12-12-84
