Seniors
First Quarter:
In perfect conditions for football, the Dogs came out running in the opening minutes of the game to show they were ready to play.
Luke O’Toole was awarded a free at the opening centre bounce and his long kick forward was brilliantly roved off the pack by Kyle Symons which allowed him to run in and slot a goal from 35 metres out to provide the boys with a wonderful start.
Hard work from Ryan Devereux and Simon Bunyan, allowed the ball to be carried forward where Symons received a free for a push in the back, and his kick gave him two goals in as many minutes.
A great passage of play involving Lachie Gilbert, Kyle Brasser, Symons, Bunyan and Brad Carroll resulted in Dean Pound marking right on the point line, but this did not stop him kicking a fine goal from the sharp angle.
Kane Bannam then had a chance to give the Dogs a fourth goal, but his kick from 30 metres out went sailing out on the full. However shortly after Brent Conway, after some sound work, found Pound who centered the ball where Symons gathered low down to kick a lovely running goal.
It was some 15 minutes before Cohuna even looked like scoring, and after a rushed behind, they then followed up with their opening goal. Tyntynder lost O’Toole with a hamstring as Cohuna were starting to look threatening as they attacked continuously towards the end of the quarter, but thankfully their kicking was astray.
Tim Styles, Paul Munro, Clint Kelly and Shannon Dixon were all working hard down back, and Pound, with a high leap to get a fingernail on what looked a certain goal, was providing lots of support. A strong mark only 15 metres out right on siren time gave Cohuna a much needed late goal to keep them within touch of the Dogs at the opening break.
Quarter Time Score: Tyntynder 4-0-24 to Cohuna 2-4-16
Second Quarter:
The Dogs began the second quarter in similar fashion to the first as Symons handballed to Carroll whose long kick to the square resulted in Brasser marking and then playing on to goal.
Again the Dogs went forward and a fast leading Carroll looked certain to mark before faltering as he also did his hamstring, thus allowing Cohuna to clear and drive the ball forward where another easy miss perhaps was justice.
Zane Hunt found Zac Denham, beginning to find plenty of the ball, who in turn sent the ball forward to Bannam, freed for interference, but his kicking again let him down. The Dogs players were all working hard, Styles and Bunyan in particular, as Symons handball to Denham, who kicked a great running goal to give the Dogs a handy lead.
Cohuna were beginning to win plenty of the ball around the centre of ground as a chain of handballs resulted in a much needed goal.
Denham, now full of confidence, gathered the ball brilliantly off the pack to run into an open goal but again Cohuna were quick to hit back with successive goals to keep them within touch.
Sean Sennar, who had replaced Carroll up forward, then ran into to goal to opened his account, the goal being great reward for the hard work up the field by Kelly, Collins, Bunyan, Denham and Dixon in particular.
Kelly was very prominent and his strong mark in the last line near the siren allowed the Dogs to go into the major break with a comfortable 14 point advantage.
Half Time Score: Tyntynder 8-1-49 to Cohuna 5-6-35
Third Quarter:
Both teams came out after the break determined to show their authority, however the opening five minutes of the quarter saw the ball rebound from half back to half back with neither side being able to notch a score during this time.
Eventually Cohuna broke the deadlock with a goal after strong handballs around the far wing took the ball into the square to allow a snap bring up full points. Denham had a chance for a quick reply but his running shot from 45 metres was off line.
Cohuna attacked again, their run appearing to be allowing them to control more of the ball, and successive goals gave them the lead for the first time at the 13 minute mark of the quarter, before a third goal in as many minutes meant the Dogs really had a fight ahead of them to get back in the game.
Carroll, after much work on his troublesome hamstring, returned to the fray and after missing his first shot resulted in a behind, he then followed up with a goal after marking strongly from a Denham pass.
Pound, Denham, Gilbert and Sennar all missed very gettable goals as it was now the Dogs turn to miss opportunities they would normally take.
The Dogs remained in the contest but a lack of awareness on occasions and poor ball use proved costly as Cohuna took full toll to kick a further two goals late in the quarter to leave them with a 13 point break going into the final quarter.
Three Quarter Time Score: Tyntynder 9-7-61 to Cohuna 11-8-74
Final Quarter:
Cohuna commenced the last quarter full of run as Carroll joined O’Toole on the pine for the Dogs. An early goal followed by a behind was followed shortly after by a lovely snap from Bunyan bringing up full points after some fine work by hand from Gilbert and Pound.
Still Cohuna continued to find lots of the ball, and successive goals increased the lead to 26 points at the 14 minute mark, leaving the Dogs with what seemed an impossible task to get back into the game.
Not to be denied the Tyntynder boys rallied, as Denham, thanks to strong work from Bunyan, found a leading Symons who marked and kicked truly from 35 metres.
Kelly was in everything across half back and his long kick found Pound, onto Devereux and with a pinpoint pass hit a leading Symons. He again split the middle to provide the Dogs with some hope of victory.
A wonderful tackle by Dixon clearly showed that the Dogs were playing to win as near misses to Pound and Bunyan could well have been goals. A 50 metre penalty to Collins allowed him to drive the ball deep into the pocket where Brasser gathered to snap a great left foot goal.
The Dogs were within a kick with three minutes still remaining on the clock as they continued to press forward. However the bounce of the ball went against them resulting in a turnover across half forward which allowed Cohuna to drive forward to mark only 20 metres out. The resulted kick was off line bringing up a point only, but this was enough to the game out of reach in the last minute.
Final Score: Tyntynder 13-9-87 defeated by Cohuna 14-12-96
