Reserves
Full Match Report:
Maybe the less said about the Reserves game the better as they again were forced to take the field with five Colts players to make up the eighteen.
The opening 15 minutes of the game was all Cohuna as the ball did not even move past the centre of the ground to venture into the Dogs forward line. Late in the quarter the Dogs had two scoring chances, thanks to fine work by Corey Frost and Dave McCann, who drove the ball forward where Matt Lanigan first missed a snap on goal and then a set shot after marking well.
The second quarter was almost a replica of the first as Cohuna did all the scoring before strong play by Ross Dadds set it up for Ian Johnason who unfortunately was off line. Right on the half time siren, Michael Crowe received a free directly in front only 30 metres out, but he too missed.
The Dogs were more competitive in the third quarter, and after Lanigan hot the post on the run, Craig Fletcher, Andrew Merritt, Dadds and Frost all combined to find Jared Frame who kicked a running goal to provide the Dogs with their first. Shortly after Frost, Dadds and Darren Both worked hard to set up a running Gary Goodes who kicked truly.
When Ollie Wise used his body to outmaneuver his opponent in the square to mark and goal, the Dogs were really on a roll. A near miss from a long shot by Frost could have given the Dogs four in succession.
However the home team rebounded from the Dogs goal scoring spree to then kick six straight in the last 8 minutes of the term to again take control of the game.
The final term had two highlights, the first being a great goal coming via Ben Johnson right foot snap from near the boundary, which provided the Dogs with their fourth early in the last quarter.
The second highlight was the control of the field umpires over a game could easily have got out of control. The umpires did a great job to keep those two players from not joining the other 34 in the all in brawl that lasted over 5 minutes before play resumed. Well done Shane!!!
Having said that, this is the second time in as many years that these two reserves teams have found themselves involved in this ugly scene and both times a certain Cohuna player, who may share the same name but certainly not the football ability with a former AFL captain, has been heavily involved. Enough said.
