First Quarter:
The Colts took the field with just the bare 18 players against Cohuna who had the luxury of four players on the bench. This was always going to make the task difficult especially in the warm conditions and on the huge Cohuna ground.
The Dogs attacked from the first bounce and had an early opportunity but Matt Lanigan’s snap was just off line to open the scoring. Cohuna then took the ball from the kick in the full length of the ground to open their account.
The teams looked evenly matched all over the ground and it was one of the Dogs smaller players in Kenny Echaluce who produced an excellent tackle on his much bigger opponent that paved the way for the ball to spill free where Mitch Seton-Steward pounced and kicked long to the square where Lanigan’s quick thinking saw him soccer the bouncing ball out of mid air for a great team goal.
Jake Templeton, very prominent early, looked certain to goal shortly after but his kick was smothered by a desperate Cohuna defender in the square resulting in a behind only.
Some loose checking across mid field allowed their opponent to then run forward and score a running goal, followed shortly after with another after an excellent mark inside the 50 metre mark.
The Dogs bounced back thanks to a wonderful intercept by Zac Pocock near Centre Half Forward, to then run in and slot through a major from 45 metres to really lift the team.
Tyntynder big men Matt Willox and Brock Storer were both working extremely hard and they combined shortly after with Bryce Delmenico to drive the ball forward which allowed David Baker to snap a great goal.
The Rundell-Gorden boys were also working hard on their wings, with Zac growing in confidence each time he was near the ball. The boys both handled the ball as Willox bombed long to the square where Templeton’s kick off the ground narrowly missed.
Quarter Time Scores: Tyntynder 3-4-22 to Cohuna 3-0-18
Second Quarter:
The opening ten minutes of the second quarter was all Cohuna as they continuously attacked thus placing great pressure on the Dogs defence. Will Smith, Jake Gilbert, Julian Bishop and Cas Mitchell were giving their all down back but eventually persistence paid off for Cohuna as they scored back to back goals.
It was all Cohuna before finally the Dogs attacked and some wonderful play by Echaluce to break free an carry the ball before kicking into the 50 where Lanigan rove off the pack before handballing to a running Seton-Stewart who took a bounce before kicking a lovely goal to keep the Dogs in the game.
Unfortunately Cohuna were quick to reply after the ball spilled to the back of the pack near their goals.
Strong work by Bryce Delmenico to work the ball to Bo Mitchell who showed great skills and speed to evade a couple of opponents before kicking long into the square where Luke Rundell-Gorden rove off the pack to snap a lovely goal.
This was a real team lifting goal and all of a sudden the Dogs looked dangerous as Willox, Storer, Kaylem Hartley, Seton-Stewart, Templeton and Pocock in particular lifted their work rates.
Bo Mitchell again worked hard to win the ball to Echaluce to allow him display great speed and skill to score a wonderful goal to allow the Dogs to go to the major break with a slight lead.
Half Time Scores: Tyntynder 6-4-40 to Cohuna 6-2-38
Third Quarter:
Cohuna once again came out full of running after the break and they were able to score an early goal courtesy of their wingman who drifted forward unmanned to win back the lead.
Two more goals followed shortly after as the game looked like slipping away completely from the Dogs. After some ten minutes of play the Dogs finally moved the ball inside their 50 where a left foot snap by Templeton hit the post.
Echaluce, playing his best game for the season, was again inspirational in winning the ball and evading two opponents to kick long into the square where Lanigan roved well to run in and score a much needed goal.
Cohuna however kept the pressure up, as they continued to attack and after a couple of great saves by Willox, they kicked their fourth for the quarter to leave them with a comfortable lead at the last break.
Three Quarter Time Score: Tyntynder 7-5-47 to Kerang 10-4-64
Final Quarter:
The Dogs were really showing signs of tiring before the break and coach Reece Collins asked the boys to lift their work rates in order to make up the deficit in the remaining 20 minutes.
However it was Cohuna who again did all the early attacking, initialing missing a three easy shots on goal before slotting through a major to seal the game as they increased their lead to more than 4 goals.
David Baker had a chance shortly after to reduce the lead but he was off line with his snap to record a behind. Cohuna immediately took the ball into their forward line where thanks to some desperate play by Bishop, Hartley and Smith, a rushed point was the result.
The Dogs took the ball the full length of the ground from the throw in where Delmenico found Pocock alone in the square for a goal, but it was all too late.
The Dogs did attack again in the closing minutes resulting in Storer snapping a point from a throw in and Templeton then marking but he too was off line.
This was a disappointing loss and coach Collins asked the boys to come better prepared for next weeks game as he clearly believed they had not come to play for this game.
Final Scores: Tyntynder 8-9-57 defeated Cohuna 11-9-75
