Tyntynder hosted the Swans, in what was a nail-biter in the end, the Swans (17.10.112) running away three point winners over Tyntynder (17.7.109) in what was a seesaw affair.
Early on it was very crowded around the football, the Swans managing to free the area more effectively, scoring the opening goal after Hugh Foott took a strong mark and converted. The Swans clearly appeared to be working harder in the first term, their demand for the football seemingly much greater than the Dogs.
What was costly for the Dogs was that Swan Hill’s goals were coming from uncharacteristic turnovers, the Swans kicking the first three of the match. Dogs spearhead Brad Carroll kicked the sides first major from beyond fifty midway through the quarter.
The Dogs then kicked the next two, to even up the scores, before Swan Mark Bonney replied with a goal on the siren to give the Swans the lead going into the first break.
In the second quarter, the Swans continued to apply immense pressure on their opposition, resulting in the Dogs turning the ball over on numerous occasions, resulting in Swan goals. The Swans scored freely as they raced clear as the Dogs struggled to move the ball forward.
The Dogs only two goals of the term came from spearhead Brad Carroll, early in the quarter, and Kyle Symonds on the siren, as the Swans dictated play, running harder both defensively and attackingly resulting in them piling on 7 goals for the term.
Trailing by 31 points at the main break, the Dogs needed a lift in the third term to remain in the match,
The Swans came out full of running to slam on early goals and increase their margin to over 50 points before the Dogs staged a short revival.
The Dogs midfield began to win some of the ball thanks to Clint Kelly in the ruck, delivering the ball quickly down to Carroll allowing him to kick four unanswered goals to provide the Dogs with some hope of victory. A poor turnover then allowed the Swans to take the ball the full length of the ground to score a major, as they rebounded to kick another two just on the siren to again provide them with a comfortable lead of 45 points at the last change.
The Swans looked to regained control early in the last term, with everything from free kicks to lucky bounces going their way, but the Dogs were not to be denied. The momentum swung as all players lifted as one, kicking seven goals to nil in the last quarter in what was an extraordinary comeback to fail by just three points.
