Seniors
First Quarter:
With both sides desperate for the four points to keep them in touch with the five, the clash against Lake Boga was always destined to be a tight game of football.
And that is exactly what we got on the day.
The Dogs looked sharp from the first bounce despite kicking against the wind in the opening term, and they attacked the ball with a real desire to make every contest important. Reece Collins ran off half back and found Mark O’Brien who in turn kicked long where Brad Carroll held a strong two grab mark only 25 metres out. Unfortunately his kick only registered a minor score, as Lake Boga then ran the ball the full length of the ground to deep into their forward line where Clint Kelly laid a high tackle on Cliff Ryan, who goaled from the resultant free kick.
Dogs had a chance for a quick reply, as they worked the ball forward where Simon Bunyan found the loose ball within the pack, laid off a swift handball to a running Zac Denham who broke free and ran into the open goal but from 20 metres he too was off line. From the kick in Boga immediately went forward resulting in a strong mark at Centre Half Forward and a long goal being the result.
Luke O’Toole, in everything early received a free across half forward, played on and handballed to Carroll who with quick hands found a running Bunyan but his snap was also off line. Boga again attacked from the resultant kick in but this time they too were off line and managed only a minor score.
Dean Pound, covering plenty of ground, found Kane Bannam who marked and then hit Brad Carroll on the chest on a fast lead. Caroll had no trouble splitting the middle of the big sticks this time to give the Dogs their first goal after some 13 minutes of football.
Kyle Brasser won the ball out of the centre with a lovely handball to Tim Styles and with a wonderful pass any forward would love to be on the end of, found Carroll again who marked and goaled from 40 metres to give Dogs back to back goals against the wind.
Lake Boga suffered a major blow shortly after when their coach Marcus Nalder limped from the ground with what appeared a serious calf injury. Leigh Masters and Zac Denham were both prominent on their respective wings as Masters again took the opposition on, kicking long this time to a leading Carroll who was held out of the contest and received the free inside the 50 and proceeded to kick his third for the quarter.
The game was tight and tense but of a high standard, as players from both teams were made to earn every kick. Pound arrived late after a Boga mark, resulting in a 50 metre penalty and a long goal to snare back the lead for the Pies.
Boga had really lifted their work rate and they controlled play late in the quarter as they scored a further two goals including one after siren as a result of a mark inside 50.
Quarter Time Score: Tyntynder 3-3-21 to Lake Boga 6-2-38
Second Quarter:
The Dogs started the second quarter well, as Bunyan and Mark Corrie combined to find Ryan Devereux whose snap just missed. The Dogs worked hard to keep the ball in their forward line and when Caroll was held without the ball and goaled from the resultant free, the Dogs seemed to lift as a team.
Brock Storer, in just his second game, was showing poise beyond his years, as he held firm under pressure to mark strongly in defence and drove the ball back into attack where Pound was interfered with and received a free, kicking his first from 30 metres out.
Tim Styles, really was working hard against an in form Cliff Ryan, and looked to be harshly treated when he was freed for blocking his opponent, the resultant kick from in close being a shocker for just a behind.
Pound continued to work hard as he applied a wonderful tackle on the wing, and then received a 50 metre penalty but he could not make them hurt on the scoreboard as his kick narrowly missed the majors. Trent Storer, showing good desperation, found Bunyan with a long handball, but his shot from 40 metres slid out on the full. Storer was in the play again as he stole the ball from a Boga defender as they attempted to clear but he too was off line scoring another point.
Denham, covering lots of the ground, kicked long to the square where Carroll with quick hands found Paul Munro who snapped a lovely goal to give the Dogs the lead at the 21 minute mark of the term.
Styles, O’Brien, Collins, Shannon Dixon, Brent Conway and Kelly were holding firm down back as the pressure applied forced another behind. A great Dogs team goal followed as Brock Storer to Dixon to Pound who marked strongly, handballed to a running O’Toole who hit Carroll on the chest allowing him to goal from 35 metres.
Corrie received a free after applying a wonderful tackle and then found Pound but his long shot sailed out on the full. Trent Storer gathered shortly after and he too missed, bringing up just a minor score from his long shot just before the half time siren.
The Dogs held a slender lead at the major break but with more accurate kicking on goal this could well have been more.
Half Time Score: Tyntynder 7-6-48 to Lake Boga 6-5-41
Third Quarter:
Boga came out running in the third term, but they too were initially off line as they scored two behinds before they slotted through two majors to win back the lead.
The Dogs began to win more of the ball as Carroll handballed to Bunyan who in turn found Brock Storer who goaled from within the square however Boga replied quickly with three unanswered majors to open up a nice lead.
Bannam started to win some of the ball as he worked hard, combining well with Kyle Symons, Masters, Dixon, Denham and Corrie to keep pushing the ball forward.
Kelly worked hard to win the ball in defence, and found Pound who marked and passed in the direction of Carroll, who was taken high in the contest to earn a free but his kick was off line. Shortly after Bunyan found Pound, with a lovely pass outside the 50, who kicked long to the square where Carroll gathered but again he was off line.
Boga also had their chances also as they followed up by missing two shots on goal, one hitting the post.
The Dogs were looking for a lift and it was Denham who was to provide it as he swooped on the ball near Centre Half Forward and then sprinted away from the opposition to run in and boot a great running goal from 35 metres.
Pound then received a free near the edge of the centre square, a decision to which Boga’s Nig Dedini obviously disagreed with and his displeasure resulted him being yellow carded. Pound’s long bomb to the square saw Carroll fly high and take a screamer to then slot through a much needed Dogs goal just prior to the siren to leave them trailing by just 9 points at the last change.
Three Quarter Time Score: Tyntynder 10-8-68 to Lake Boga 11-9-77
Final Quarter:
The Dogs attacked from the outset, as Masters kicked long to Centre Half Forward allowing Bunyan to swoop on the ball from the pack and find a leading Carroll, who missed another set shot on goal. The game became a real battle of defences as the Dogs players seemed to really lift. The efforts of Dixon were exceptional as he repeatedly repelled the Boga efforts to move forward.
Boga managed a behind and when Kelly went to kick back in he went over the line, and from the resultant ball up somehow the Pies managed to snap a lucky goal.
Again the Dogs attacked but Bunyan’s long shot managed just a behind before O’Toole intercepted the kick in to again find Carroll, who this time from 30 metres out kicked a goal.
Boga were not to be denied as they again pushed forward resulting in a strong mark in the square allowed them to again increase their lead.
Strong team work by the Dogs resulted in the ball ending up in the hands of Carroll but his snap just missed. Kyle Brasser copped a heavy tackle around a ball up contest, and he kicked truly from 35 metres out to bring the Dogs within a kick of drawing level.
The match became a real hard slog with both teams giving their all in a desperate last minute bid for victory and despite the Dogs best efforts they were unable to find a way deep into attack.
Boga went forward in the closing seconds and managed to score a point that sealed the game.
The Dogs players were shattered by yet another narrow loss but they could hold their heads high as they had played strong positive football against a quality opponent.
Final Score: Tyntynder 12-11-83 defeated Lake Boga 13-12-90
