Welcome back to the Nest, especially our supportive sponsors, loyal supporters and dedicated volunteers, after a month with a bye and couple of weeks away. We also welcome our opponents today, the Mulwala Lions. Let’s hope we have a great day of hard (but fair) contests where the Hawks prevail and come out on top!
Starting to push our reunion weekend, which is fast approaching at the end of July. Going to be huge, with 10 football and netball sides (Footy – 1961 Seniors, 1981 Seniors and 4ths, Netball – 1961 Juniors, 1981 Midgets, Junior Juniors and Juniors, 1991 – A Grade and C Grade, 2001 – C Grade) celebrating anniversaries. All the players of these sides have been invited so we are looking forward to having a cavalcade of past champions in our presence for our Rd 17 clash against the old foe, Cobram! All club members, sponsors and life members have also been invited so you need to get your RSVP’s into Jordan Flanagan or Carmen O’Dwyer ASAP. Going to be a fantastic weekend and one we are looking at making a huge annual social event for years to come!
Last week, we travelled over to Blueland, where the weather was nasty as were all but one of the netball results! Fortunately, the Hawks were able to grab the points in the Seniors and U17s of the footy, in games that could only be described as ball-bursters!!
Seniors:
The Hawks came up against a youthful Numurkah side, who took it right up to the boys from go to woe!!! In a nail-biter of a contest, there was very little difference between the two sides for the entirety of the game. The Hawks had a couple of players down in the first half, whilst the Blues were playing out of their skin. Rory going down with a calf didn’t help the cause and it was the Hawks who went into the long break trailing by 2 points. The good thing about it was we only needed a couple players to lift. At the resumption, Plappy went on a long lead, which the hammy couldn’t cope with thus we were down to 1 fit player on the bench. With the game on the line, the Hawks, especially the younger players, responded in the best fashion possible, lifting to snatch a well fought out 18 point victory. Apart from some opportunities missed, which was out of the control of the Hawks’ players, the game was a fantastic contest and played accordingly. Hydey put in another Herculean effort, running himself ragged. Robbo, when the chips were down, was the glue that kept the Hawks in the contest, especially when relieving Hendo, and finished off strongly to have a blinder! Brayden was terrific and his attack on the footy was special, Pricey Snr. is starting to string together the form we know he is capable of, and Pinny and Beast continued their adaption to travelling, showing they are starting to get use to it all!!! All the best for today, boys!
Reserves:
The result of the Ressies’ game was a very disappointing outcome for the boys and their tilt at finals’ action. With the Blues kicking with the breeze in the first, they got out to a couple of goal lead. Unfortunately, the second saw Numurkah build on the lead established and then a scoreless third quarter meant the boys were playing for pride in the last. With numbers diminishing, the boys are finding it hard to put a consistent 21 on the paddock and this is not helping their cause. Although this is the case, a number of the boys are struggling to play with any consistency and they need to start stringing games together, which are on par with their best efforts if finals are to become a reality!! Hilly returned in the best way possible, producing a solid game of footy. Col and Joffa both kept their consistency in tack, featuring prominently. Poka and Dale S has red hot goes and tried valiantly to keep the Hawks in the picture, while Pumba returned a more productive return of 4 majors to take his season tally to 26 goals. A win today keeps the finals’ embers glowing. Good luck!
U17s:
What a great game of footy! Congratulations to both sides for putting on an encounter, which had everyone on the edge of their seats!! The Hawks dominated proceedings for 3 quarters, with their tackling of the opposition one for the highlight reel. Unfortunately, the boys took the foot off the pedal and allowed the young Blues to get up a full head of steam. With about a minute to go, Numurkah hit the front (although the scoreboard was apparently incorrect) by a point and it looked as though the Hawks were gone. A centre clearance by Artie, roving his own ruck work, found its way into the mitts of Mitch Richmann, who swivelled and banged home the match winner with about 20 secs left. Amazing!!! Well done to all the boys, going from boiled lollies to chocolates within a week! Shows what you are capable of when focused! The match-winning duo of Richmann and Rootsey were exceptional all day long and went a long way in the Hawks’ best win for 2011. Mitch Sim, the Russell boys and Buff Smith were as good, as were the rest of the team. The double chance again becomes a distinct possibility, with the boys only a game away from 2nd spot on the ladder. Have a good one today!
U14s:
The boys tried their hearts out as per usual but, once again, succumbed to a bigger, stronger side and the winning margin rule was applied during the third quarter. Would be nice to see a few of the Senior players come down and help the boys out as they battle away. Thanks to Jono, who is doing all he can to assist the boys and he’s not even playing!!!! Anyway, with that said, Liam E, Lachie S, Daniel J, Jake J, Cooper T and Will F all typified the Barooga spirit and never surrended and gave it their all. Good luck this week coming up against the Lions. The first round match went right down to the wire so let’s hope we can reverse the fortunes.
Game milestones this week include: Jake Jenkins( 50 U14 games), Sam Gough (100 Club games), Peter Connors (100 Club games), Will Robinson (100 Club games) and Aaron Elzinga (150 Club games). Congratulations to all the boys on their great achievement. Has come to light that Leigh Adkins played his 250th Reserves game against Echuca Utd. so big congratulations to him on this.
