On a bleak Saturday, the Barooga Hawks welcomed the Moama Magpies to the Nest, for what was predicted to be a hard day at the office. It proved just that!!!
The Senior game was billed as the MFL Match of the Round, with the winner of the game taking outright second position on the premiership ladder. The game started at a frenetic pace, with inaccuracy by the Magpies, kicking with the aide of a 4 goal breeze, keeping the Hawks in the game. The momentum of the game swung full circle as the second quarter saw the Hawks doing all the attacking. A 7.3 to 0.2 quarter saw them take a commanding 36 point lead into the long break. The heavens opened up during the 3rd and the Hawks looked as though their 1/2 time lead would be enough. No-one told the Mowers that as they mounted a monumental comeback. The Hawks' lead was withered back to 10 points. With the game swinging in the Magpies favour, coupled with some very ordinary umpiring decisions, the ball spent the first 10 minutes of the final quarter camped in the Mowers' forward 50. Fortunately they weren't able to convert, although getting within 4 points, and the Hawks kicked the last 3 goals of the game to win by 22 points. A fantastic win full of character! Hydey was terrific all day with the conditions suiting him. The Rock (Ryan F) was fantastic in keeping the dangreous Allen to 3 goals, a couple which came through sheer luck, TOD continued his scintillating form, the big Moosa was a force to be reckon with (although he must of done something to upset the ump!),Haz was sensational at the goal face kicking 6 and Cat Face (Kieron Hill) was unpassable at CHB/FB. A week's rest well earnt! Well done boys.
The Reserves lost their first game for 1 1/2 years by a mere 4 points! Playing catch up footy didn't help matters, with the boys, at one stage late in the game, looking down the barrel of a 6-8 goal loss. To their credit, their last quarter was nothing short of brilliant and they nearly pulled off a miracle. Zeke Bunge had a shot, which flew over the pack, bounced in the goal square, took a leggy instead of an off break and cannoned into the post. The siren sounded on the recommencement. The boys will now look to bounce back against Finley in a couple of weeks time. The big Meat Tray was again a shining light, Matt Connors did a sterling job on the full forward, Jay and Jonno did everything in their powers to repel each Magpie attack, Joffa tried to give the Hawks some spark through the middle and Nicko was a terrific focal point up forward. The U17s wheels have started to wobble a bit after a nice little 3 game winning streak. Saturday saw the boys return to the type of form which indicates their 10th positioning on the ladder. The boys had a couple on the board at half time, trailing by about 5 goals. From then on in, it was all one way traffic as the Mowers dominated proceedings and went onto record a massive 97 point victory. Tom Butler, Pete Connors, Boxhead (Connor R), Josh McGaw, Riley Brooks and Sam Gough were good contributors in a side that was lacking many! In the U14 game, the boys lead from start to finish and recorded a percentage boosting 11 goal win. It wasn't until the last quarter that they let the Mowers sneak in to score a goal. A very pleasing result that entrenches the boys just in 4th spot on percentage.
On the netball front, the A Grade girls finally got it together for four quarters and came out of the contest triumphant by 15 goals. Good win but nothing to write home about as it was against the winless bottom side! Still got start somewhere and hopefully it will reignite the girls' season. Bec Bryce's influence on the game was telling and she was adjudged Barooga's best. B Grade had a bit of a slip up and wouldn't have been expecting to be walking off the court without the 4 points, against a side sitting 4 places below them. Funny thing this netball and they suffered a 3 goal lost. Gemma McGaw can hold her head high as she played brilliantly for the entirety. C Grade cemented their spot in the top 6 with a commanding 13 goal victory. Kelly Wright continued her magnificent season, being awarded the side's best player for the umptieth time this season. Young gun, Hannah Kelly, also played well and received the same honour. C Reserve nearly got over the line, playing much more consistently over the course of the game. A great effort against the side who's coming fourth on the ladder. 5 goals was the difference in the end of a tight contest. Emily Fisher lead from the front and was duly presented with BOC accolades. In the Junior divisions, the U17s managed to keep the opposition under 3 figures but still suffered a big loss, 72 -14. Although the girls are not having much luck on the court, they are still enjoying their netball and having a lot of fun playing with each other. Great to hear. Mikayla Bowden and Helena Sanderson were given dual encouragement awards. The two combatants in the U15 game couldn't be separated at the final hooter, drawing the game at 23 goals apiece. Very exciting stuff!! The U13s had a super 6 goal win, beating their Mower peers, 13 - 7. This win has them sitting 1/2 a game out of the top six. Sonya McCarthy and Hannah Bray were instrumental in the side's success. The U11s continued on their improvement with a good win over the Magpies. Steffi Vogel played extremely well and received the encouragement award.
This week sees the Hawks put the feet up, recovery and then set their sights on the final stretch, starting with Finley at Finley Saturday week. Until then, take care and enjoy the break!!!
